Galena High School (Illinois)
Galena High School is the public secondary school in Galena, Illinois, and is part of Galena Unit School District 120. , GHS has roughly 240 students. Its current building was built in 1957. History The original Galena High School was built in 1861 on Prospect Street and was known as Central High School. In April 1904, Central High School burned to the ground and a new, larger school was built in the same location, opening in 1906. Surrounding communities that may have had rural schools previous to the construction of Central High School were consolidated after the State of Illinois mandated that larger school districts be created in 1949. Opened on September 3, 1957, the new high school immediately brought changes to the curriculum including courses in agriculture and sociology. Outside of the curriculum, the high school building featured a full size regulation gymnasium along with a modern cafeteria. The Northwest Upstate Illini Conference is a high school conference (sports), conference in northwest and north central Illinois. The conference participates in athletics and activities in the Illinois High School Association. East Dubuque High School and jr high, or EDHS / js, is a public four-year high school located at 200 Parklane Drive in East Dubuque, Illinois, a small city in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, in the Midwestern United States. Lena-Winslow High School
Lena-Winslow High School, dedicated December 7, 1958 and affectionately known as "Le-Win", is a high school located in the town of Lena, Illinois. Part of the Lena-Winslow Community Unit School District, Le-Win became the second largest school district in Stephenson County, when, in 1949, the State of Illinois mandated that larger school districts be created. Only the districts of Dakota and Freeport are larger. Facilities Lena-Winslow Community Unit No. 202 includes students from the villages of Lena, Winslow, McConnell, Eleroy and Waddams Grove. Because only Lena and Winslow had High Schools, their names were both given to the new union. Originally the high school was provided with students from 21 rural elementary schools including McConnell, Eleroy, and Waddams Grove, as well as the elementary schools in Lena and Winslow. Galena, Illinois
Galena is the largest city in and the county seat of Jo Daviess County, Illinois, with a population of 3,308 at the 2020 census. A section of the city is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Galena Historic District. The city is named for the mineral galena, which was in the ore that formed the basis for the region's early lead mining economy. Native Americans, primarily Mesquakie, Ho-Chunk, Sauk, and Menominee had mined galena in the area for more than a thousand years before European Americans settled in the area. James Wright (historian)
James Wright (August 16, 1939 – October 10, 2022) was an American writer and academic administrator who was the President of Dartmouth College and the Eleazar Wheelock Professor of History at Dartmouth. The 16th President in the Wheelock Succession, he served as Dartmouth president from 1998 until 2009. He joined the Dartmouth History Department in 1969 and served as dean of faculty from 1989 to 1997 and as provost from 1997 to 1998. Wright received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and a masters and doctoral degree in history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. LaMetta Wynn
LaMetta Wynn (August 4, 1933 – June 24, 2021) was the mayor of Clinton, Iowa from 1995 to 2007. She was the first African-American woman to hold the position of mayor in any Iowa municipality.
