Gale McArthur
Gale Eugene McArthur (March 6, 1929 – January 2, 2020) was an All-American basketball player at Oklahoma A&M University (now Oklahoma State). McArthur, a guard from Mangum, Oklahoma, attended Oklahoma A&M and played basketball for Hall of Fame coach Henry Iba from 1948 to 1951. During his time in Stillwater, McArthur played on two Final Four teams, playing in the NCAA championship game in 1949 (a 46–36 loss to Kentucky) as a sophomore and the national semifinals as a senior in 1951. In that senior year of 1950–51, McArthur averaged 11.6 points per game and led the Aggies to a 29–6 record. The team won the Missouri Valley Conference for the second time in McArthur's career. Mangum, Oklahoma
Mangum is a city in and county seat of Greer County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,010 at the 2010 census. It was originally part of Old Greer County in the Texas panhandle. The community was named for A. S. Mangum, who owned the land on which the town was founded in 1882. 1951 NBA Draft
The 1951 NBA draft was the fifth annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on April 25, 1951, before the 1951–52 season. In this draft, ten remaining NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players. In each round, the teams select in reverse order of their win–loss record in the previous season. The Tri-Cities Blackhawks participated in the draft, but relocated to Milwaukee and became the Milwaukee Hawks prior to the start of the season. The draft consisted of 12 rounds comprising 87 players selected. Draft selections and draftee career notes Gene Melchiorre from Bradley University was selected first overall by the Baltimore Bullets.
