Galax Leafs
The Galax Leafs were a minor league baseball team based in Galax, Virginia. From 1946 to 1950, the Galax Leafs played exclusively as members of the Class D level Blue Ridge League, winning the 1947 championship and 1948 pennant. The Galax Leafs were a minor league affiliate of the New York Giants in 1950. The Leafs hosted minor league home games at Felts Park. History Minor league baseball began in Galax, Virginia in 1946, when the Galax "Leafs" became charter members of the four–team Class D level Blue Ridge League. The Mount Airy Graniteers, Radford Rockets and Salem Friends teams joined Galax as charter members in beginning 1946 league play, which commenced on May 1, 1946. The Galax, Virginia use of the "Leafs" moniker corresponds to local plant life. The "Galax Leaf," a type of green, waxy leaf is indigenous to the region. The North Wilkesboro Flashers were a minor league baseball team based in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, United States. John Ralph Warner (August 29, 1903 – March 13, 1986) was an American baseball infielder. He played professional baseball player from 1921 to 1946, including eight seasons in Major League Baseball with the Detroit Tigers (1925–1928), Brooklyn Robins (1929–1931), and Philadelphia Phillies (1932). Early years Warner was born in Evansville, Indiana, in 1903. Professional baseball Minor leagues Warner began playing professional baseball in 1921 for Waynesboro in the Blue Ridge League. From 1923 to 1925, he played for the Vernon Tigers in the Pacific Coast League. He compiled a .303 batting average in 159 games for Vernon in 1924 and .296 in 166 games in 1925. Eddie Morgan (baseball)
Edwin Willis Morgan (November 19, 1914 – June 27, 1982), nicknamed "Pepper", was a backup right fielder/first baseman who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1936 and 1937. Listed at , , Morgan batted and threw left-handed. Morgan graduated from Lakewood (Ohio) High School in 1931 and is in the LHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Morgan reached the majors in 1936 with the St. Louis Cardinals, spending one year for them before moving to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937. On April 14, 1936, Morgan hit a pinch-hit home run on the very first pitch he faced in his first career at bat (becoming the first pinch hitter ever to do so), but he saw little action after that, going 5 for 18 in eight appearances. At the end of the season, he was sent by St. Louis to Brooklyn in the same transaction that brought George Earnshaw to the Cardinals. Blue Ridge League
The Blue Ridge League was the name of two minor league baseball organizations that operated in the first half of the twentieth century in the United States. History The first league operated for the better part of sixteen years, from 1915 through 1918, and 1920 to 1930. It was a Class D level league in the old classification system that ran from Class D up to Class Double-A, and had teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The league was founded by Charles W. Boyer in 1915, as part of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. Boyer, former president of the original South Atlantic League, served as the league president in the Blue Ridge League's inaugural season. Due to internal problems, Boyer resigned as president the first week of the 1916 season, being replaced by James Vincent Jamison Jr. Jamison was at the forefront of the league until it ceased its operations shortly before the beginning of the 1931 season.
