Gaisu Yari
Gaisu Yari is an Afghan human rights and women's rights activist, writer, blogger and speaker. She is considered one of the prominent campaigners for women's rights in Afghanistan. She is well known for her bravery for taking on the Taliban directly by questioning their policies. Biography At the age of six, she was forced to become engaged to a six-year-old son of a pro-Taliban commander in eastern Afghanistan. She managed to escape to the United States with the help of American soldiers from the forced engagement after turning eighteen. She was initially set to marry the son of that Taliban commander with whom she was engaged and just two months prior to the marriage ceremony, she managed to get a visa to migrate to USA. She decided to prioritize her focus towards her career progress and education during her stay in the US. Afghan Refugees
Afghan refugees are citizens of Afghanistan who were compelled to abandon their country as a result of major wars, persecution, torture or genocide. The 1978 Saur Revolution followed by the 1979 Soviet invasion marked the first wave of internal displacement and international migration from Afghanistan to neighboring Iran and Pakistan; smaller numbers also went to India or to the former Soviet Union. Between 1979 and 1992, more than 20% of Afghanistan's population fled the country as refugees. When the Soviet forces left Afghanistan in 1989, many began returning to their homeland. They again migrated to neighboring countries during and after the Afghan Civil War (1992–1996) but between 2002 and 2022 most have returned to Afghanistan.
