Gagetown (2016 population: 711) is a village in Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is situated on the west bank of the Saint John River and is the county's shire town. History Acadians Gagetown was originally named Grimross by the Acadians and Maliseet, who lived there prior to the Expulsion of the Acadians. The Raid on Grimross occurred during the St. John River Campaign (1758–59). During the Expulsion of the Acadians, many Acadians fled from various parts of the Maritimes to villages along the Saint John River. The St. John River Campaign occurred during the French and Indian War when Colonel Robert Monckton led a force of 1,150 British soldiers to destroy the Acadian settlements on the banks of the Saint John River until they reached the largest village of Ste Anne's Point (present day Fredericton, New Brunswick) in February 1759. Construction of the base At the beginning of the Cold War, Canadian defence planners recognized the need for providing the Canadian Army with a suitable training facility where brigade and division-sized armoured, infantry, and artillery units could exercise in preparation for their role in defending western Europe under Canada's obligations to the North Atlantic Treaty. The chemical herbicides used include 50/50 mixtures of 2,4-D/ 2,4,5-T, and Tordon 101, also known as Agent Orange and Agent White. Gagetown is a civil parish in Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. For governance purposes it is divided between CFB Gagetown, the village of Gagetown and the local service district of Upper Gagetown, the latter two of which are members of Regional Service Commission 11 (RSC11). Origin of name The original township was named in honour of General Thomas Gage, British Commander-in-Chief, North America at the time; he was principal grantee of the township. History Gagetown was created in 1765 as Gage Township in Nova Scotia. In 1786 the township formed the core of Gagetown Parish when New Brunswick erected its counties and parishes. The parish added territory back to the Charlotte County line. In 1838 the rear of Gagetown was included in the newly erected Petersville Parish.
