Gabriela Scherer
Gabriela Scherer (born 1981 in Zurich, Switzerland) is a Swiss mezzo-soprano. Birth and education Gabriela Scherer was born in 1981 in Zurich, Switzerland. She grew up in Switzerland where she was exposed to music at an early age. Having spent many years singing and learning music with the local choir she began her studies with Helen Keller (Smpv) in Zurich. Between 2002 and 2006, Gabriela continued her studies at the University of Mozarteum Salzburg with Prof. Horiana Branisteanu and Prof. KS Elizabeth Wilke. She attended courses from Prof. Claudia Eder and Denia Mazzola-Gavazzeni (Milan). Career During the year, the young mezzo-soprano worked as well with Prof. Irina Gavrilovici in Vienna and still works with Bernhard Gärtner in (Stuttgart). In addition intense co-operation with the Salzburger chamber soloists allowed her to take part in numerous concerts in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. ''Werther'' is an opera (''drame lyrique'') in four acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet and Georges Hartmann (who used the pseudonym Henri Grémont). Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet (; 12 May 1842 – 13 August 1912) was a French composer of the Romantic era best known for his operas, of which he wrote more than thirty. The two most frequently staged are '' Manon'' (1884) and ''Werther'' (1892). He also composed oratorios, ballets, orchestral works, incidental music, piano pieces, songs and other music. While still a schoolboy, Massenet was admitted to France's principal music college, the Paris Conservatoire. There he studied under Ambroise Thomas, whom he greatly admired. Christoph Willibald Gluck
Christoph Willibald (Ritter von) Gluck (; 2 July 1714 – 15 November 1787) was a composer of Italian and French opera in the early classical period. Born in the Upper Palatinate and raised in Bohemia, both part of the Holy Roman Empire, he gained prominence at the Habsburg court at Vienna. There he brought about the practical reform of opera's dramaturgical practices for which many intellectuals had been campaigning. With a series of radical new works in the 1760s, among them '' Orfeo ed Euridice'' and '' Alceste'', he broke the stranglehold that Metastasian '' opera seria'' had enjoyed for much of the century. Hermann Suter
Hermann Suter (28 April 1870 – 22 June 1926) was a Swiss composer and conductor. Biography Born in Kaiserstuhl, Aargau, Suter studied in the conservatories at Basel, Stuttgart and Leipzig, under Hans Huber and Carl Reinecke. He was an organist and conductor in Zurich from 1892 to 1902, after which he moved to Basel, where he lived to his death. He was director of the Basel Conservatory from 1918 to 1921. One of his pupils at Basel was Richard Tauber who sang three of his songs at the Olten Music Festival in June 1912. Compositions Suter's compositions contain echoes of Brahms, Strauss, Mahler, and many other composers who Suter conducted at Basel. ''Le Laudi'' (''The Praises''), Op. 25, is an oratorio by the Swiss composer Hermann Suter. The full title is ''Le Laudi di San Francesco d'Assisi (Cantico delle creature)'' (''The Praises of St. Francis of Assisi (Canticle of the Creatures))''. The text is Francis of Assisi's Canticle of the Sun in the original Italian. Suter scored the work for soloists, choir, children's choir, organ and large orchestra. It was premiered in 1924, with the composer conducting the Basler Gesangverein on the occasion of its centenary. The oratorio of around 70 minutes is one of Suter's most important works and has been championed by conductors such as Wilhelm Furtwängler, who conducted the first performance in Vienna in 1926 and further performances in Europe.
