Gabriel Mercedes
Yulis Gabriel Mercedes Reyes (born November 12, 1979 in Monte Plata, Monte Plata Province) is a Dominican taekwondo practitioner and Olympic medalist. He won a silver medal in the – 58 kg class at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, after tying with Guillermo Pérez of Mexico, but losing by a judge's decision. He carried the flag for his delegation at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He was favored to win his county's third medal at these games. He competed in the Men's 58 kg (flyweight). He lasted one round and a half. A bad move shattered the meniscus and the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He kept fighting with evident pain, before he limped away in tears. Félix Sánchez (hurdler)
Félix Sánchez, (born August 30, 1977) is a retired Dominican-American track and field athlete. He is of Dominican descent, was born and raised in the United States, and competed for the Dominican Republic, specializing in the 400 meter hurdles. He is a two-time Olympic gold medallist, winning gold in 2004 and 2012, and was also World Champion in 2001 and 2003. Just before turning 36, he set the Masters M35 World Record with a time of 48.10. Sanchez acquired many nicknames: "Super Felix", "the Invincible", "Superman", and "the Dictator". The Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium, the Dominican Republic’s largest stadium, is named after him. The men's 58 kg competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics was held on 8 August, at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. Competition format The main bracket consisted of a single elimination tournament, culminating in the gold medal match. Two bronze medals were awarded at the Taekwondo competitions. A repechage was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Every competitor who lost to one of the two finalists competed in the repechage, another single-elimination competition. Each semifinal loser faced the last remaining repechage competitor from the opposite half of the bracket in a bronze medal match. Guillermo Pérez Sandoval (born October 14, 1979) is a Mexican taekwondo practitioner and Olympic gold medal winner. Pérez stands at 171 cm and weighs 58 kg. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Pérez won the gold medal in the −58 kg category. Pérez defeated Dominican Gabriel Mercedes on August 20, 2008. The match ended 1–1 after four rounds, but Pérez was deemed superior by unanimous decision.
