GSC 03089-00929
GSC 03089-00929 is a magnitude 12 star located approximately 760 light-years away in the constellation of Hercules. This star is a G type main sequence star that is similar to but slightly cooler than the Sun. This star is identified in SIMBAD as a variable star per the 1SWASP survey. The star GSC 03089-00929 is named Pipoltr. The name was selected in the NameExoWorlds campaign by Liechtenstein, during the 100th anniversary of the IAU. In the local dialect of Triesenberg, Pipoltr is a bright and visible butterfly. Planetary system In 2007 the TrES program found exoplanet TrES-3b orbiting this star by using the transit method. The transit timing variation analysis did not reveal any additional planets in the system as of 2020, and the physical mechanism underlying transit timing variations remains unexplained as in 2022. The Guide Star Catalog (GSC), also known as the ''Hubble Space Telescope, Guide Catalog'' (''HSTGC''), is a star catalog compiled to support the Hubble Space Telescope with targeting off-axis stars. GSC-I contained approximately 20,000,000 stars with apparent magnitudes of 6 to 15. GSC-II contains 945,592,683 stars out to magnitude 21. As far as possible, binary stars and non-stellar objects have been excluded or flagged as not meeting the requirements of Fine Guidance Sensors. Methods Of Detecting Extrasolar Planets
Any planet is an extremely faint light source compared to its parent star. For example, a star like the Sun is about a billion times as bright as the reflected light from any of the planets orbiting it. In addition to the intrinsic difficulty of detecting such a faint light source, the light from the parent star causes a glare that washes it out. For those reasons, very few of the exoplanets reported have been observed directly, with even fewer being resolved from their host star. Instead, astronomers have generally had to resort to indirect methods to detect extrasolar planets. As of 2016, several different indirect methods have yielded success. NameExoWorlds (also known as IAU NameExoWorlds) is the name of various projects managed by the International Astronomical Union (I.A.U.) to encourage names to be submitted for astronomical objects, which would later be considered for official adoption by the organization. History The first such project (NameExoWorlds I), in 2015, regarded the naming of stars and exoplanets. 573,242 votes were submitted by members by the time the contest closed on October 31, 2015, and the names of 31 exoplanets and 14 stars were selected from these.
