GO Transit (Wisconsin)
GO Transit, formerly the Oshkosh Transit System, is the primary provider of mass transportation in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. History Transit service in Oshkosh began in June 1882 when the Oshkosh Street Railway Company began operating six horse-drawn cars on 4.5 miles of track. Over the years, this system was expanded and in 1897, electric streetcars replaced the horse-drawn cars. In the 1920's buses began to replace streetcars, and the last streetcar ran on May 31, 1930. In 1933, Oshkosh City Lines, Inc. assumed operation of urban buses in Oshkosh and in 1962 City Transit Lines took over operations. City-owned Oshkosh Transit Service began in 1978, following the takeover of the struggling private City Transit Lines. Nine routes serve the city from Monday through Saturday. Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Oshkosh is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat. The city had a population of 66,816 in 2020, making it the ninth-largest city in Wisconsin. It is also adjacent to the Town of Oshkosh. History Oshkosh was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant "claw" (cf. Ojibwe ''oshkanzh'', "the claw"). Although the fur trade attracted the first European settlers to the area as early as 1818, it never became a major player in the fur trade. The 1820s mining boom in southwest Wisconsin along with the opening of the Erie Canal shifted commercial activity away from the Fox River Valley and Green Bay. Soon after 1830, much of the trade moved west, as there had been over-trapping in the region. Fond Du Lac Area Transit
Fond du Lac Area Transit is the city's local public transit operator. The first public transit in Fond du Lac was a privately owned streetcar service in the 1880s; which transitioned to buses between 1944 and 1967. After several private operators, the bus system ceased operations in December 1967. In August 1968 the Fondy Area Bus Cooperative was established to provide bus service by support of private citizens and businesses, in lieu of a municipal one; however, it asked the city for financial support in 1970. The current city-owned transit system began operations on January 15, 1973, following the successful passing of the referendum on November 7, 1972. It operates eight bus routes (with one of those routes operating only in the morning and afternoon to service K-12 schools), as well as a Paratransit service and taxi service for areas that the bus system does not reach. Fond du Lac () is a city in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 44,678 at the 2020 census. Winnebago County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 171,730. Its county seat is Oshkosh.
