GDC Observatory
The GDC Observatory is an astronomical observatory dedicated to the exploration and science of the night sky. Located in Gingin, Western Australia, the observatory is a part of the Gingin Gravity Precinct. The Observatory is open to the public on a regular basis. Southern Cross Cosmos Centre The observatory is located in the Southern Cross Cosmos Centre, a purpose built facility opened in 2001, with a slide-off roof housing five telescopes available for public use on astronomical viewing nights. The largest telescope is a Obsession telescope named "Brodie-Hall", donated to the observatory by Laurence and Jean Brodie-Hall. The facility is located next-door to the Zadko telescope run by the University of Western Australia, which is actively involved in scientific research. An observatory is a location used for observing terrestrial, marine, or celestial events. Astronomy, climatology/meteorology, geophysical, oceanography and volcanology are examples of disciplines for which observatories have been constructed. Gingin, Western Australia
Gingin is a town in Western Australia, located on the Brand Highway north of the Perth city centre. It is the council seat for the Shire of Gingin local government area. Gingin had a population of 852 at the . The town's economy is mostly based on its agriculture, although there has been an increasing focus on science with the establishment of the Australian International Gravitational Observatory and Gravity Discovery Centre. Obsession Telescopes is an American telescope company which specializes in the production of Dobsonian telescopes. The company has been noted for releasing the first truss commercially available Dobsonian telescope. It is also the largest producer of Dobsonian telescopes, and has worldwide operations. Obsession Telescopes was founded in 1989 by David Kriege and is based in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. Laurence Brodie-Hall
Sir Laurence "Brodie" Brodie-Hall (10 June 1910 – 1 October 2006) was an influential figure in the mining industry of Western Australia (WA). Early life Brodie-Hall was born in London and emigrated to Australia in 1924, leaving his parents. He worked as a farm hand in New South Wales and moved to WA in 1927. He co-bought a garage business but went broke during the Great Depression. Early mining career He was an underground gold miner in WA's Murchison. In 1934 he joined Western Mining Corporation's Triton mine near Cue as a machine miner. Next he went to Kalgoorlie, took a shift job at the Kalgurli Ore Treatment Company's plant and began a part-time course at the WA School of Mines. On the Goldfields he played the violin, sang and was involved in amateur theatricals. In 1939 he worked at the Emperor Mine in Fiji. Jean, Lady Brodie-Hall, , FAILA (15 August 1925 – July 2023) was an Australian landscape architect. She was a founding member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and had a long and distinguished career in Western Australia before her retirement in 1981. She was acknowledged as a leader in West Australian landscape architecture and received a national award for landscape architecture in 1990.
