GAA All-Time All-Star Award (Hurling)
The All-Time All Star Award in Hurling was an award given on an annual basis to a sportsperson who had made a long-running and considerable contribution to the sport of hurling in Ireland. In existence from 1980 until 1994 the award was presented to a former player who, more than likely, would have received an All Star had the awards scheme been in existence during their playing days. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Martin White (hurler)
Martin White (31 July 1909 – 12 October 2011) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. White made his first appearance for the team during the 1931 championship and became a regular member of the team until his retirement following the conclusion of the 1938 championship. During that time he won three All-Ireland winner's medals and three Leinster winner's medals. At club level White enjoyed lengthy careers with Tullaroan in Kilkenny and with Blackrock in Cork. He won three county club championship winners' medals with the former. Until his death White was the oldest living senior All-Ireland medal winner. Biography White was born in Lacken near Tullaroan, County Kilkenny, in 1909. The Wexford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae Loch Garman) or Wexford GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Wexford. John Joe 'Goggles' Doyle
John Joe "Goggles" Doyle (14 June 1906 – 11 August 2000) was an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Clare senior team. Doyle made his first appearance for the team during the 1926 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1938 championship. During that time he won one Munster medal. Doyle was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Doyle is a six-time county club championship medalist with Newmarket-on-Fergus. In retirement from playing Doyle was recognised as one of a number of the "greatest players never to have won an All-Ireland medal". In 1990 Doyle was presented with the GAA All-Time All-Star Award. Michael John Flaherty
M. J. "Inky" Flaherty (27 September 1917 – 20 May 1992) was an Irish hurler who played at senior level for the Galway county team from 1936 until 1953, and was also a noted boxer. Flaherty trained the Galway hurling team in the 1950s, and again in the 1970s, leading the side to league success in 1975. Starting out playing hurling for the Liam Mellows club, Flaherty went on to spend most of his inter-club days representing Ballinasloe in both hurling and football. Also contributing as a coach and referee, his lifelong dedication to the GAA was recognised in 1989 when he was presented with a GAA All-Time All-Star Award. The currently uncontested Connacht Senior Hurling Championship was named in his honour. Paddy Collins
Paddy "Fox" Collins (12 April 1903 – 17 February 1995) was an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-back for the Cork senior team. Born in Kinsale, County Cork, Collins first played competitive hurling during his schooling at The North Monastery. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-five when he first linked up with the Cork senior team. He made his senior debut during the 1928 championship. Collins immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen, and won two All-Ireland medals, two Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Collins won one Railway Cup medal. At club level he was a seven-time championship medallist with Glen Rovers.
