The G36 is gas-operated and feeds from a 30-round detachable box magazine or 100-round C-Mag drum magazine. In 2012, the G36 was found to suffer from severe accuracy problems when the weapon overheated which prompted the search for a replacement. In 2017, the ''Bundeswehr'' launched the ''System Sturmgewehr Bundeswehr'', a program to find a replacement for the G36. The weapons put forth were the Heckler & Koch HK416, Heckler & ... Battle Rifle
A battle rifle is a service rifle chambered to fire a fully powered cartridge. The term "battle rifle" is a retronym created largely out of a need to better differentiate the intermediate cartridge, intermediate-powered assault rifles (e.g. the StG-44, AK-47, M16 rifle, M16, Steyr AUG, AUG) from full-powered rifles (e.g. the FG-42, AVS-36, FN FAL, and M14 rifle, M14, as well as the H&K G3 outside of sniping uses) as both classes of modern firearms have a similar appearance and share many of the same features such as magazine (firearms), detachable magazines, pistol grips, separate upper and lower receiver (firearms), receivers etc. Battle rifles were most prominent from the 1940s to the 1970s, when they were used as Service rifle, service rifles. While modern battle rifles largely resemble modern assault rifle designs, which replaced battle rifles in most roles, the term may also describe older military full-powered semi-automatic rifles such as the M1 Garand, SVT-40, Gewehr 41, Ge ... Heckler & Koch G3
The Heckler & Koch G3 (''Gewehr'' 3) is a 7.62×51mm NATO, select-fire battle rifle developed in the 1950s by the German armament manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H&K) in collaboration with the Spanish state-owned design and development agency CETME (''Centro de Estudios Técnicos de Materiales Especiales''). The modular designed G3 has over the years been exported to over 70 countries and manufactured under licence in at least 15 countries, bringing the total number built to around 7,800,000. The G3 was the service rifle of the armed forces of Germany until it was replaced by the G36 in the 1990s. History The origin of the G3 can be traced back to the final years of World War II when Mauser engineers at the Light Weapon Development Group (''Abteilung 37'') at Oberndorf am Neckar designed the ''Maschinenkarabiner Gerät 06'' (MKb ''Gerät'' 06, "machine carbine device 06") prototype assault rifle chambered for the intermediate 7.92×33mm ''Kurz'' cartridge, first with the '' ... Reflex Sight
A reflector sight or reflex sight is an optical sight that allows the user to look through a partially reflecting glass element and see an illuminated projection of an aiming point or some other image superimposed on the field of view. These sights work on the simple optical principle that anything at the focus of a lens or curved mirror (such as an illuminated reticle) will appear to be sitting in front of the viewer at infinity. Reflector sights employ some sort of "reflector" to allow the viewer to see the infinity image and the field of view at the same time, either by bouncing the image created by lens off a slanted glass plate, or by using a mostly clear curved glass reflector that images the reticle while the viewer looks through the reflector. Since the reticle is at infinity it stays in alignment with the device to which the sight is attached regardless of the viewer's eye position, removing most of the parallax and other sighting errors found in simple sighting devices. ... Drum Magazine
A drum magazine is a type of high-capacity magazine for firearms. Cylindrical in shape (similar to a drum), drum magazines store rounds in a spiral around the center of the magazine, facing the direction of the barrel. Drum magazines are contrasted with more common box-type magazines, which have a lower capacity and store rounds flat. The capacity of drum magazines varies, but is generally between 50 and 100 rounds. History and usage 1800s The first drum magazine was patented in 1853 by Charles N. Tyler. 1900s Pistols and rifles A drum magazine was built for the Luger (Pistole 1908) pistol; although the Luger usually used an 8-cartridge box magazine, the optional 32-cartridge ''Schneckenmagazine'' ("snail magazine") was also sometimes used. Moubray G. Farquhar and Arthur H. Hill applied for a British patent for "A New or Improved Cartridge Magazine for Small Arms and Machine Guns" in 1915 for their Farquhar–Hill rifle, and it was accepted in 1919.
