G. Carey Winfrey
George Carey Winfrey (March 15, 1885 - November 13, 1962) was an American thoroughbred racehorse owner and trainer who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Biography He was born in Wills Point, Texas, on March 15, 1885. He learned the art of training thoroughbreds at the Gravesend track in Brooklyn in 1904 from such masters as Sam Hildreth and Johnny Powers. Winfrey maintained a small but successful stable. He raced horses he owned as well as several for his married daughter, Jan Winfrey Burke. He never had more than 10 horses in his care at one time, but he won 940 races in his career with purse earnings of $2.4 million. He was honored by the New York Turf Writers in 1956 for "Excellence in the Training of Thoroughbreds." Winfrey trained his first stakes winner in 1931, sending out Charon to win the Myrtle Claiming Stakes at Aqueduct. Wills Point, Texas
Wills Point is a city in Van Zandt County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,524 at the 2010 census. History Founded in 1873, Wills Point gets its name from an early American settler, William Wills, who had arrived in the area ''circa'' 1848. Wills eventually purchased a cabin from Adam Sullivan in 1852. The name 'point' may also derive from the shape of the original timberline near the cabin, though there have been unsubstantiated arguments that the name relates to the area's elevation. The layout of the city was the work of engineer General Grenville M. Dodge of the California Construction Company. The downtown streets were laid with red bricks upon packed sand in the 1920s by locals and remain in use. Downtown Wills Point has many of its original buildings that are over one hundred years old including the Wills cabin, a drug store, a dry good store, and a law office. Governor George W. Gravesend Track
Gravesend is a neighborhood in the south-central section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, on the southwestern edge of Long Island in the U.S. state of New York. It is bounded by the Belt Parkway to the south, Bay Parkway to the west, Avenue P to the north, and Ocean Parkway to the east. Gravesend was one of the original towns in the Dutch colony of New Netherland. After the English took over, it was one of the six original towns of Kings County in colonial New York. Gravesend was the only English chartered town in what became Kings County, and is notable as being one of the first towns founded by a woman, Lady Deborah Moody. The Town of Gravesend encompassed in southern Kings County, including the entire island of Coney Island, and was annexed by the City of Brooklyn in 1894.
