After 20 years of working with Luc, their former bass guitarist, ''Turn'' is the only Ex album to feature double bass player Rosemarie giving the band a sound akin their prior work with cellist Tom Cora. In tandem with The Ex's drummer Katrin, Rosemarie also contributed significant female vocal harmonies to the album. The album received critical acclaim and has been singled out by many publications as the band's best album yet. Background & Recording ''Turn'' displays the influence of African rhythms and melodies on the band's music. On "Theme From Konono" The Ex's guitars imitate amplified thumb pianos in tribute to the Congolese percussion group Konono Nº 1 who had toured Europe with The Ex. Dizzy Spells (album)
''Dizzy Spells'' is an album by Dutch post-punk band The Ex. It is the band's 11th studio album and 18th overall, and was produced by Steve Albini who had also produced its predecessor. ''Dizzy Spells'' was also The Ex's final studio album to feature bass guitarist Luc who would end up leaving the band after being a member for 20 years. Content ''Pitchforks Spencer Owen characterized the music as "art punk" writing that their " gular guitars, ..oddly clattering beats, and ..six-minute songs ..seem to borrow more from Wire and the Talking Heads than the Ramones and the Stooges." Comparisons to Wire were also made by Todd Kristel of ''Allmusic'', who wrote that the album "should appeal to fans of this Dutch band's previous work, as well as newcomers who enjoy Fugazi, Gang of Four, or some of the projects by this album's producer, Steve Albini." Douglas Wolk called the album a "twin to 1998's '' Starters Alternators''" and highlighted "guitarists Terrie and Andy's dueling shred ...

Starters Alternators
''Starters Alternators'' is an album by Dutch post-punk band The Ex. It is the band's 10th studio album and was produced by Steve Albini for a 1998 CD released jointly by Touch and Go Records and the band’s own label, Ex Records. Reception Jack Rabid reviewed the album for AllMusic, writing: "They just keep pumping out the frightening rhythms, so terse and vicious that they bring back good memories of not only the hardest Fugazi, but older U.S. Midwest outfits with this kind of tight, forward-springing, offbeat rhythmic attack, such as Rifle Sport, Man Sized Action, and, most of all, Rapeman and Shellac. The last two may seem too obvious, since Steve Albini is the man behind the desk for this one -- and he turns in his best, clearest sounding, deepest production since he did the first Breeders LP -- but it's not that simple. Reach back further, to some old live Gang of Four, Killing Joke, or Mekons live tape, and you might generate the precision clash of drums and bass behin ...

Mudbird Shivers
''Mudbird Shivers'' is an album by Dutch punk/experimental band The Ex. The album prominently features vocals by guest musician Han Buhrs, who also plays a number of different instruments on the recording. It was released the same year as The Ex's entirely instrumental improv album ''Instant''. Reception Dean McFarlane of ''Allmusic'' called the album "a fantastic introduction to their varied material, which is high-energy post-punk in a similar vein to Fugazi, Crass, and Shellac." "To describe their approach," he writes, "the Ex is a quintet of guitars percussion and vocals – stylistic references would be Captain Beefheart for all the angular abrasive guitar work and syncopated rhythm, early P.I.L. in that they share the influence of African and Jamaican musics – but the most striking reference is European traditional and folk, given a post-punk electric shock on this engaging album. Highly political in their lyrical content, the range here covers angular bass and drum ...

Instant (album)
''Instant'' is a double compact disc by the Dutch experimental post-punk band The Ex. The band recorded the album in conjunction with many guest musicians, notably members of Holland's Instant Composers Pool (ICP) for whom the album is partially named, the other part being that the Dutch term for "free improvisation" literally translates to "instant composition." Background The Ex had long collaborated with ICP members and featured those recordings on the double album '' Joggers and Smoggers'' and on the box set '' 6''. ''Instant'' marked the band's first album of entirely instrumental and improvised music. ''Instant's'' 32 tracks feature shifting duos and trios of musicians performing on a wide array of conventional (electric guitars, reeds, brass, etc.) and non-conventional (e.g., toffee-tin bass) instruments. Though the entire album could have fit onto one 70-minute CD, the band formatted it for a briefer listening experience with each of ''Instants 35-minute discs contain ...

In January 1993 the artists entered the Friends Studio in Amsterdam when they recorded 16 songs with Dolf Planteijdt, along with regular collaborator Johannes van der Weert adding to the group's vocal line-up. Scrabbling At The Lock
''Scrabbling at the Lock'' is the first of two albums by Dutch punk band The Ex in collaboration with avant-garde cellist Tom Cora. It is also the first of The Ex's studio albums to feature the work of then Dog Faced Hermans guitarist Andy Moor, who has remained in the band ever since. Background With the release of their album '' Joggers and Smoggers'', The Ex were developing further collaborations with musicians from around the world, including New York-based cellist Tom Cora. In the midst of launching their six-part record subscription series and organizing tours on North American, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, The Ex and Cora spent a week in Dolf Planteijdt's studio at the end of January 1991. The 12 songs were mixed in February and slated for a release during a break from tour that summer. The album features heavy interplay of two guitars, bass, cello and more prominent female vocals.
