Fyodor Alekseyev
Fyodor Yakovlevich Alekseyev (Russian: Фёдор Яковлевич Алексеев; c.1753—1755, Saint Petersburg - 23 November 1824, Saint Petersburg) was a Russian painter. His contemporaries often called him the Russian Canaletto, in recognition of his masterful vedute. Biography He was the son of the caretaker at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he was admitted in 1764 upon a petition by his father, after studying for several years at the garrison school. In 1767, he took a class in ornamental sculpture and later studied scenic painting with Antonio Peresinotti. From 1773 to 1777, he lived in Venice on a fellowship, where he studied to be a theater artist. This did not appeal to him, however, and he spent much of his time painting landscapes and copying the old masters. Mikhail Ivanovich Terebenyov ( rus, Михаил Иванович Теребенёв; 6 September 1795 – 25 December 1864) was a Russian portrait painter, academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Biography Mikhail Terebenyov was born in Saint Petersburg in 1795. His father Ivan Efimovich Terebenyov (1759–1799) was an artist who graduated from the Academy of Arts in 1779, his brother Ivan (1780–1815) was a sculptor, painter and graphic artist, another brother Vladimir (1808–1876) was an artist and lithographer. In 1803, he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts. The artist died in Saint Petersburg on December 25, 1864. Kitay-gorod ( rus, Китай-город, p=kʲɪˈtaj ˈɡorət), also referred to as the Great Possad () in the 16th and 17th centuries, is a cultural and historical area within the central part of Moscow in Russia, defined by the remnants of now almost entirely razed fortifications, narrow streets and very densely built cityscape. It is separated from the Kremlin by Red Square. Kitay-gorod does not constitute a district (''raion''), as there are no resident voters, thus, municipal elections are not possible. Rather, the territory has been part of Tverskoy District, and the Central Administrative Okrug authorities have managed the area directly since 2003. Etymology Beside Kitay-gorod in Moscovia (region), Moscovia in ancient Russia, Kitay was also a name for a sea. A sea called Kitay exists in Odessa in Ukraine. The Saint Petersburg Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre (The Big Stone Theatre of Saint Petersburg, russian: Большой Каменный Театр) was a theatre in Saint Petersburg. It was built in 1783 to Antonio Rinaldi's Neoclassical design as the Kamenny (i.e., Stone) Theatre; Giovanni Paisiello’s opera ''Il mondo della luna'' was performed at the opening on 24 September. It was rebuilt in 1802 according to the designs of the architect Thomas de Thomon and renamed the Bolshoi, but burned down in 1811. The building was restored in 1818, and modified between 1826 and 1836 by Alberto Cavos to accommodate more modern machinery. Until 1886, the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre was principal theatre for both the Imperial Ballet and the Imperial Russian Opera. In 1886 the building was declared unsafe and, at the behest of the theatre director Ivan Vsevolozhsky, the ballet and opera performances moved to the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, where they have remained ever since.
