''Fundamental'' is the second studio album by Puerto Rican progressive metal band Puya. Released in 1999, it is their first release on an international label ( MCA). Puya (band)
Puya is a Puerto Rican progressive metal band. Formed in 1991, the band rose to prominence with their fusion of jazz, salsa and heavy metal. History The band originally formed in Puerto Rico as a progressive rock combo, in 1991, under the name Whisker Biscuit. In 1992, the band added vocalist Sergio Curbelo and moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where they created a mix of salsa and heavy metal with the assistance of Jeff Renza and the Noiz Boiz production studio. They adopted the name Puya in 1994, which is Spanish for "sharp point", but is also a popular type of Puerto Rican coffee. Puya was the first Puerto Rican rock band to achieve a high level of international success. In 1995, Puya released their self-titled debut album under the Noiz Boiz label, but did not sign with the label. ''Puya'' is the self-titled debut album of the Puerto Rican progressive metal band of the same name, released in 1995 by the Pompano Beach, Florida independent record label Noiz Boiz. Background Puya formed in Puerto Rico as a progressive rock combo under the name Whisker Biscuit in 1991. Upon relocating to Florida, the band changed its name to Puya, after a popular type of coffee. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1995 by Noiz Boiz Records. A subsequent '' Billboard'' review identified the band as being unsigned as of 1996. The band's lineup on this album consisted of guitarist Ramon Ortiz and bassist Harold Hopkins Miranda. Following the release of the album, Sergio Curbelo became the band's lead singer in 1996. CMJ Holdings Corp. is a music events and online media company, originally founded in 1978, which ran a website, hosted an annual festival in New York City, and published two magazines, ''CMJ New Music Monthly'' and ''CMJ New Music Report''. The company folded around 2017, but was bought by Amazing Radio in 2019 who will bring back the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, along with other new live and live-streamed offerings. The letters CMJ originally stood for ''College Media Journal'' but was also often considered short for ''College Music Journal''. Harold Hopkins Miranda
Harold Hopkins Miranda (born 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico is a Puerto Rican bass player, composer, director and founder of the progressive metal band Puya. Hopkins Miranda is largely responsible for creating Puya's style, a fusion of jazz, salsa and heavy metal. Hopkins Miranda and guitarist Ramon Ortiz are the composers (music and lyrics) of most Puya's songs. Hopkins Miranda is also a developing music producer and plays, composes and directs other musical projects. He is currently the bass player for De La Tierra. History Beginnings Hopkins Miranda was born to mother Margarita Miranda (of Corozal, Puerto Rico) and father Harold E. Hopkins Jr. (of Stanwood, Michigan) and was raised in Puerto Rico. He started taking classical piano following the example of his older sister, pianist Brenda Hopkins, at an early age. At age 18, he moved to the bass. Ramon Ortiz (musician)
Ramón Ortiz (June 15, 1970) is a Puerto Rican guitarist and composer, best known as a founding member and director of the progressive metal band Puya, the heavy metal band Ankla and his solo project ORTIZ. Ramón is a visionary and pioneer of the Latin metal movement internationally. His music is a fusion that blends the power of guitar driven heavy rock and metal with the syncopated beats of Afro-Caribbean music. As once stated by Peavey amplification: "his music is an exercise in contrast and control, like a fist inside a velvet glove. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he started the guitar at age seven. Son and grandson of the guitar and the Puerto Rican cuatro. He studied classical guitar at the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico during his adolescence." Puya Ramón founded Puya in the early 90s, which continues to be one of the most notable heavy rock bands in Latin America.
