Friedrich Christian Delius
Friedrich Christian Delius (13 February 1943 – 30 May 2022), also known by his pen name F.C. Delius, was a German novelist. He wrote books about historic events, such as the 1954 FIFA World Cup, and RAF terrorism. Four of his novels were translated into English, including ''The Pears of Ribbeck'' and ''Portrait of the Mother as a Young Woman''. His awards include the Georg Büchner Prize of 2011. Biography Delius was born in Rome, where his father was pastor of the German Protestant Church. He grew up in Wehrda (since 1971 among the constituent communities of Haunetal) and Korbach in the state of Hesse. He studied German literature at the Free University and the Technical University in Berlin, and in London. He published poetry beginning at age 18, and appeared at the last meetings of the Gruppe 47 at age 21, as the second-youngest participant. Klaus Wagenbach (11 July 1930 – 17 December 2021) was a German author and publisher who was the founder of publisher . Life and career Wagenbach was born in Berlin, Province of Brandenburg, Brandenburg, Free State of Prussia, Prussia, Weimar Republic, Germany, on 11 July 1930. In 1949 Wagenbach started an apprenticeship at the publishing house Suhrkamp Verlag, Suhrkamp/ S. Fischer Verlag, Fischer (at this time one company). Wagenbach wrote his Ph.D. thesis about the work of Franz Kafka. When Fischer was sold to Holtzbrinck Publishing Group, the new bosses fired Wagenbach. Wagenbach had complained about the arrest of the GDR-publisher at Leipzig Book Fair. The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (german: Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, or , BVO) is the only federal decoration of Germany. It is awarded for special achievements in political, economic, cultural, intellectual or honorary fields. It was created by the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Theodor Heuss, on 7 September 1951. Colloquially, the decorations of the different classes of the Order are also known as the Federal Cross of Merit (). It has been awarded to over 200,000 individuals in total, both Germans and foreigners. Since the 1990s, the number of annual awards has declined from over 4,000, first to around 2,300–2,500 per year, and now under 2,000, with a low of 1752 in 2011. Deutscher Kritikerpreis was a cultural prize awarded annually by the Association of German Critics (Verband der Deutschen Kritiker e.V.) from 1951 to 2009.
