French Ship Agamemnon (1812)
''Agamemnon'' was a 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy. She served during the later days of the First French Empire, notably taking part in the action of 5 November 1813. During the Bourbon Restoration, she was razéed into a 58-gun frigate and renamed ''Amphitrite''. Career Built in French-occupied Genoa, ''Agamemnon'' was commissioned in 1812 and appointed to the Toulon squadron. She took part in the action of 5 November 1813 under Jean-Marie Letellier, and suffered the brunt of the French losses during the engagement, with nine wounded and damage to her masts. In June 1822, she transferred to Brest and the next year, she was razéed into a 58-gun frigate. She was recommissioned on 17 April 1824 as ''Amphitrite''. Action Of 5 November 1813
The action of 5 November 1813 was a brief naval clash during the Napoleonic Wars, between part of the British Mediterranean Fleet led by Vice-Admiral Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, Sir Edward Pellew, and a French force under Rear-Admiral Julien Cosmao, Julien Cosmao-Kerjulien. The engagement took place outside the French port of Toulon. The clash occurred when a French fleet under Vice-Admiral Maxime Julien Émeriau de Beauverger took advantage of a favourable wind and the temporary absence of the British blockading force, to leave port to carry out exercises. Émeriau abandoned the exercises when the wind changed, but while returning to port his rear came under attack from the recently returned British inshore squadron. The British attack was reinforced by newly arrived ships from the main fleet, but the French were able to escape into Toulon after exchanging cannon fire with the British. The invasion of Algiers in 1830 was a large-scale military operation by which the Kingdom of France, ruled by Charles X, invaded and conquered the Deylik of Algiers. Algiers was annexed by the Ottoman Empire in 1529 after the capture of Algiers in 1529 and had been under direct rule until 1710, when Baba Ali Chaouch achieved de facto independence from the Ottomans, though the Regency was still nominally a part of the Ottoman Empire. Captain Jean-Marie Letellier (Brest, 3 October 1767 - Alexandria, 17 April 1830) was a French Navy officer. Biography Letellier joined the Navy at age 13 as an apprentice, and was severely wounded after a few weeks of service when the escort on which he sailed battled two privateers. The next year, he volunteered on the frigate ''Bellone'', which raided commerce off India. While at sea, he transferred to Suffren's squadron, and subsequently took part in the battles of Suffren's campaigns, serving on ''Coventry'' and ''Sévère''. Returned to Brest with the ''Illustre'', Letellier sailed with the merchant navy until 1793, when he embarked on a privateer. In September, he joined the Navy with the rank of ensign on the ''Pomone'' and served aboard until the action of 23 April 1794, in which the frigate was captured and Letellier was taken prisoner.
