A district (german: Bezirk) is a second-level division of the executive arm of the Austrian government. District offices are the primary point of contact between resident and state for most acts of government that exceed municipal purview: marriage licenses, driver licenses, passports, assembly permits, hunting permits, or dealings with public health officers for example all involve interaction with the district administrative authority (). Schönau Im Mühlkreis
Schönau im Mühlkreis is a municipality in the district of Freistadt in Upper Austria, Austria. As of January 2013, the village has 1899 inhabitants. Geography Schönau im Mühlkreis lies at 635 m above sea level in the Mühlviertel area of Upper Austria. The community runs 9.7 km from north to south, and 8.5 km from east to west, encompassing a total area of 38.6 km². Forests cover 17.4% of the community, while 19.7% of it is used for agriculture. Schönau is a relatively large community, area-wise, and is bordered in the north by the river Waldaist, and in the south by the lesser river Naarn. Sandl
Sandl is a municipality in the district of Freistadt in Upper Austria, Austria. Geography Sandl is located in the northeast of Upper Austria in the Austrian part of the Gratzen Mountains. Located in the west of the town centre, the Viehberg, with 1112 m, is the highest mountain of the Gratzener Bergland and the second highest of the Mühlviertel. History The area surrounding Sandl came under the dominion of the Bavarian Duchy in the seventh century. The first settlers of Sand came in 1376 during the rule of Austrian Duke Albrecht III, clearing the woods between Weitra and Freistadt. The free clearing of the forest ended in 1627, when Emperor Ferdinand II handed the woods over to Leonhard Helfried Graf Meggau. Graf Meggau was the caretaker for the Lordship of Freistadt.
