London Docklands Development Corporation
The London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) was a quango agency set up by the UK Government in 1981 to regenerate the depressed Docklands area of east London. During its seventeen-year existence it was responsible for regenerating an area of in the London Boroughs of Newham, Tower Hamlets and Southwark. LDDC helped to create Canary Wharf, Surrey Quays shopping centre, London City Airport, ExCeL Exhibition Centre, London Arena and the Docklands Light Railway, bringing more than 120,000 new jobs to the Docklands and making the area highly sought after for housing. Although initially fiercely resisted by local councils and residents, today it is generally regarded as having been a success and is now used as an exemplar of large-scale regeneration, although tensions between older and more recent residents remain. Simon Patterson (artist)
Simon Patterson (born 1967) is an English artist and was born in Leatherhead, Surrey. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1996 for his exhibitions at the Lisson Gallery, the Gandy Gallery, and three shows in Japan. He is the younger brother of the painter Richard Patterson. Life and career Patterson attended Hertfordshire College of Art and Design and Goldsmiths College between 1985 and 1989. Richard Patterson (artist)
Richard Patterson (born 1963 in Leatherhead, Surrey) is an English artist and one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). He is currently based in Dallas, Texas. Patterson's work is primarily painterly, but occasionally morphs into three-dimensional works as well. Education Patterson attended a Watford College of Art and Design Course from 1982 to 1983. He received a B.A. Honors degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths' (1983–86). Lala Meredith-Vula
Lala Meredith-Vula (born 1966) is an English and Albanian Kosovian artist and photographer. In 1988 she was included in the Damien Hirst-led Freeze exhibition. Lala is a professor at De Montfort University, Leicester. Life and work Lala Meredith-Vula was born in Sarajevo and moved to England in 1970. She attended Trent University, Nottingham (1984–85) and Goldsmiths College (1985–88), then the University of Priština, Kosovo, for postgraduate studies. In 1988, she was one of the exhibitors in the exhibition '' Freeze'', organised by Damien Hirst which showcased the work of many of the artists who were later to become known as the Young British Artists. Abigail Lane (born 1967) is an English artist who works in photography, wax casting, printing and sound. Lane was one of the exhibitors in the 1988 Damien Hirst-led Freeze (exhibition), Freeze exhibition—a mixed show of art which was significant in the development of the later-to-be YBA scene of art. Life and work Lane was born in Penzance, Cornwall. She studied at University of the West of England, Bristol Polytechnic and Goldsmiths College, University of London. Lanes work attempts to address an absence of an artist or "missing person". Anya Gallaccio
Anya Gallaccio (born 1963) is a British artist, who creates site-specific, minimalist installations and often works with organic matter (including chocolate, sugar, flowers and ice). Her use of organic materials results in natural processes of transformation and decay, meaning that Gallaccio is unable to predict the end result of her installations. Something which at the start of an exhibition may be pleasurable, such as the scent of flowers or chocolate, would inevitably become increasingly unpleasant over time. The timely and site-specific nature of her work make it notoriously difficult to document. Her work therefore challenges the traditional notion that an art object or sculpture should essentially be a monument within a museum or gallery. Angela Bulloch
Angela Bulloch (born 1966 in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada), is an artist who often works with sound and installation; she is recognised as one of the Young British Artists. Bulloch lives and works in Berlin. Life and career Bulloch studied at Goldsmiths' College, London (1985–1988). She was included in the Freeze Exhibition in 1988 and was established as one of the Young British Artists. On reflecting on being a Young British Artist, Bulloch said "When I was 22, it was important for me. It was helpful in terms of managing media responses to my work because whenever I mentioned this little label, everyone was like, “Oh yeah, YBA”.
