Frederick Holden
Frederick Charles Thomas Holden (22 March 1894 – 26 April 1961) was an Australian politician. He was born in Wallace to George Frederick Holden, a merchant and Minnie Elizabeth Ireson. He attended Geelong College and became a farmer at Melton. In December 1914 he married Elsie Maud Thompson, with whom he had a daughter. He served on Melton Shire Council from 1916 to 1927, and was twice president (1918–19, 1926–27). In 1932 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Grant, representing the United Australia Party. He left the party in 1937 and was an independent until 1940, when he joined the Country Party. He was party whip from 1945 to 1947. Alexander Fraser (Australian Politician)
Alexander John Fraser (22 August 1892 – 9 July 1965) was an Australian politician. Fraser was educated at Kyneton College in Kyneton, Victoria, before becoming a company manager. He was a good enough Australian rules footballer to play ten games for Melbourne in the 1914 and 1915 Victorian Football League seasons. Ralph Hjorth
Ralph Theodore Hjorth (26 July 1883 – 14 January 1970) was an Australian politician. He was born in Melton to Danish-born farmer Anders Stenson and Annie Devanny. He became a farmer at Coimadai and then an undertaker and ironmonger at Bacchus Marsh. Around 1907 he married Mary Agnes Byron, with whom he had four children. In 1924 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Bulla. He transferred to Grant in 1927 but was defeated in 1932. Whip (politics)
A whip is an official of a political party whose task is to ensure party discipline in a legislature. This means ensuring that members of the party vote according to the party platform, rather than according to their own individual ideology or the will of their donors or constituents. Whips are the party's "enforcers". They try to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being effectively expelled from the party. The term is taken from the "whipper-in" during a hunt, who tries to prevent hounds from wandering away from a hunting pack. Additionally, the term "whip" may mean the voting instructions issued to legislators, or the status of a certain legislator in their party's parliamentary grouping.
