Fred Maher
Frederick J. Maher is an American drummer, music programmer and record producer. He was a member of the bands Massacre (1980–81), the Dance, Material, Scritti Politti, and has recorded and toured with Lou Reed. In 1984 he released ''Basic'', an instrumental collaboration album with ex- Voidoids guitarist Robert Quine. Maher's credits as a producer include Lou Reed's ''New York'' (1989), Trip Shakespeare's ''Across the Universe'' (1990), Matthew Sweet's ''Girlfriend'' (1991), Information Society's self-titled album (1988, which achieved platinum sales status), their 1990 album ''Hack'', and a track on 1997's '' Don't Be Afraid''. Maher co-produced Lloyd Cole's self-titled debut solo album. Maher regularly works as a studio drummer, and he has often collaborated with entertainment producer Ron Baldwin. Title The title's echo of a particularly trippy Beatles song recalls lead songwriter Matt Wilson's preoccupation with the British Invasion band: :There's a part of us that's plainly trying to make epic, gorgeous music that can be admired on at least a couple of levels ... ''Lloyd Cole'', also known as ''The X Album'', is the debut solo album by English singer, songwriter and musician Lloyd Cole released on February 21, 1990 by Polydor and Capitol. Previously Cole was best known for his work with The Commotions but this album marked a departure from their signature sound and an opportunity for him to collaborate with other musicians and explore new ideas. Background Following the release of '' Mainstream'', and limited touring and promotion in support of it, Cole left the Commotions. ''Don't Be Afraid'' is a 1997 album by electro-dance group Information Society. The album adds industrial elements and guitars. The album was recorded with Kurt Harland remaining the sole member of the band, featuring collaborators Fred Maher and Steve Siebold of ''HateDept.''. The album features a more conceptual sound unlike past material, with Harland describing the album's themes as "extremes of emotion and sensation." Background According to Kurt's Insoc.org website, the oldest work on the album is the first version of ''closing in'', which dates back to 1992. Most tracks on the album have had previous iterations and versions, with these tracks being updated over the years. Harland initially worked with Fred Maher in 1996 on some of the very first tracks of the album. Hack (album)
''Hack'' is an album by the freestyle synthpop band Information Society. The album sold quite well but did not outsell the band's first album. It is the only major-label-distributed title that has the modern Tommy Boy Records logo on it. Artwork and packaging The menacing car on the cover is "Vector", Kurt Harland's heavily customized 1973 Plymouth Satellite Sebring. The cassette tape for this album used an unusual naming convention for the sides. Instead of 1 and 2 or A and B, there was the Gilligan Side and the Skipper Side. The vinyl edition had a Scooby Side and a Shaggy Side. Musical style Riding on the success of its self-titled major-label debut, Harland decided to have the band experiment on this album with a more radical, harsher sound.
