Fred L. Peterson
Fred Lawrence Peterson (May 21, 1896 – October 16, 1985) was an American politician and businessman in the state of Oregon. A native of Minnesota, he grew up in Portland, Oregon, where he served as mayor from 1953 through 1956. Early life Fred Lawrence Peterson was born on May 21, 1896, in Owatonna, Minnesota, to Frank R. Peterson and Nina A. Peterson. Peterson lived in Portland from 1902, and graduated from Washington High School in 1915. His father Frank operated the Lents pharmacy for a number of years. Fred served as a sergeant in the 162nd Infantry Regiment during World War I and was later promoted to second lieutenant. City commissioner (1941–1952) In 1940, Peterson was a prominent Portland east-side businessman when he began his run for political office. At that time, he was pharmacist and proprietor of the Glisan Street Pharmacy. Portland Rose Festival
The Portland Rose Festival is an annual civic festival held during the month of June in Portland, Oregon. It is organized by the volunteer non-profit Portland Rose Festival Association with the purpose of promoting the Portland region. It includes three separate parades, along with a number of other activities. History The Portland Rose Society, founded by Georgiana Pittock and friends in 1888, began with a backyard rose show in Pittock's garden. The annual fundraising event drew more crowds each year. By 1904, the rose society was hosting its annual rose show along with additional festivities, including a parade and pageant. Willamette National Cemetery
Willamette National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery located about southeast of the city of Portland, Oregon. Administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, it encompasses straddling the county line between Multnomah and Clackamas Counties. As of 2021, there had been 188,000 interments. It is one of three national cemeteries in Oregon (the other two being Roseburg and Eagle Point). History Plans to create a military cemetery in the Portland area started as early as 1941, and Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a bill to establish a national cemetery, but the necessary money to acquire the land was never allocated. Finally, in 1949 the state of Oregon donated of land for the establishment of a National Cemetery.
