Fred Howland
Fred A. Howland (November 10, 1864 – March 30, 1953) was a Vermont attorney, businessman, and Republican politician. He served as Secretary of State of Vermont and president of the National Life Insurance Company. Early life Fred Arthur Howland was born in Franconia, New Hampshire on November 10, 1864. His father, Moses Nathan Howland (1833-1906) was a dentist, and his mother Sylvia Ann Shipman Howland (1841-1901) was a sister of Mary Ellen Shipman (1846—1893), the wife of William P. Dillingham. Fred Howland was educated in New Hampshire, and graduated from Phillips Andover Academy in 1883. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1887, studied law with Dillingham, and was admitted to the bar in 1890. George Dewey
George Dewey (December 26, 1837January 16, 1917) was Admiral of the Navy, the only person in United States history to have attained that rank. He is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War, with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side. Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont. At age 15, Dewey's father enrolled him at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. Two years later Norwich expelled him for drunkenness and herding sheep into the barracks. Summarily, he entered the United States Naval Academy in 1854. He graduated from the academy in 1858 and was assigned as the executive lieutenant of the at the beginning of the Civil War. He participated in the capture of New Orleans and the Siege of Port Hudson, helping the Union take control of the Mississippi River. Julius Yemans Dewey
Julius Yemans Dewey ( – ) was an American doctor of medicine and businessman in the state of Vermont during the 19th century. He was born in Berlin, Vermont. He attended Washington County Grammar School and then the University of Vermont. His first wife and the mother of his children was Mary Perrin whom he married in 1825. She died young, however, and he had two later marriages without issue, to Susan Edson Tarbox and Susan Elizabeth Griggs Lilley. He was a founder of the Christ Episcopal church of Montpelier. He served as a trustee of Norwich University. He was a founder of and later president of the National Life Insurance Company and he personally delivered the remittance for the company's first claim, prompting a public thank-you from the surviving family. Green Mount Cemetery is a burial ground in Montpelier, Vermont. Located at 250 State Street, the 35-acre facility was established in 1854. It is operated by the City of Montpelier, and managed by the city's part time cemetery commission and a small full-time staff. History The land on which Green Mount Cemetery is located was purchased from Isaiah Silver in 1854. Of the $2,210 purchase price (about $70,000 in 2022), $1,000 was donated in accordance with the will of Calvin J. Keith, a Montpelier lawyer who died in 1853, and $1,210 came from the town government. In 1905, a bequest from John E. Hubbard enabled construction of the chapel-vault building. The vault portion can hold up to 60 entombments, while the chapel can accommodate 60 people for funeral services. The Washington County Railroad is a shortline railroad operating in Vermont and a sliver of New Hampshire, forming part of the Vermont Rail System. The WACR began operating in 1980 over the old Montpelier and Barre Railroad in Washington County, VT, Washington County, which the state acquired to ensure the continuance of rail service, and ceased operations in early 1999.
