Fred Barratt
Fred Barratt (12 April 1894 – 29 January 1947) played first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club from 1914 to 1931 and represented England in five Test matches, one in the home series against South Africa in 1929 and four on the inaugural Test series against New Zealand in the 1929–30 season. He was born in Annesley, Nottinghamshire and died at Nottingham General Hospital, Nottingham. From a mining background, Barratt was a right-arm fast bowler who, according to ''Wisden'', combined "swerve with his pace". He was also a right-handed lower-order batsman whose batting was always forthright, but became suddenly quite proficient from 1928 onwards. Annesley
Annesley is a village and civil parish in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire, England, between Hucknall and Kirkby-in-Ashfield. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 1,162 (including Annesley Woodhouse to the west). Annesley Hall is a grade two listed building, once owned by the Chaworth-Musters family, which has connections to the Byron family of nearby Newstead Abbey. Annesley Old Church was mentioned by Lord Byron and D. H. Lawrence. There is also close by the earthworks of Annesley Castle. The Misk Hills lie to the south of the village. Annesley is part of Nottinghamshire's Hidden Valleys area. The parish is grouped with the neighbouring parish of Felley to elect a joint parish council. The old church of Annesley was dedicated to All Saints. It was allowed to become derelict in the 1940s. Willis Walker
Willis Walker (24 November 1892 − 3 December 1991) was an English footballer and County Cricketer. He played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Leeds City, South Shields, Bradford Park Avenue and Stockport County. As a Nottinghamshire County cricketer, he was predominantly a batsman, scoring over a thousand first-class runs in a season on ten occasions. Football career Walker began his career at Sheffield United in 1911, though never made it into the first team. In 1912 he was bought by Midland League side Doncaster Rovers where he started off as understudy to Harry Bromage, and took over as first choice keeper for the 1913–14 season when he appeared in all 36 league fixtures. Second Division Leeds City signed him in May 1914, but after 14 appearances the onset of war temporarily ended Football League matches. George Gunn (cricketer)
George Gunn (13 June 1879 – 29 June 1958) was an English cricketer who played in 15 Test matches between 1907 and 1930. Domestically, he played first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire from 1902 to 1932, and is their all-time leading run scorer. Playing career Along with other notable batsmen such as Jack Hobbs, Frank Woolley and Phil Mead, he was one of a group who, beginning their careers in the Edwardian Era, seemed to go on for ever. In Gunn's case, it was from 1902 to 1932, in the course of which he made more runs for Nottinghamshire than anyone else, before or since: 31,592 at 35.70. Benefit (sports)
A benefit is a match or season of activities granted by a sporting body to a loyal sportsman to boost their income before retirement. Often this is in the form of a match for which all the ticket proceeds are given to the player in question. However hosting one of these matches is a risk for the player in question as he/she is responsible for paying any relevant receipts and collects any excess income from the match, therefore income from such matches is more often than not reliant on attendance. Sometimes, the "beneficiary" can opt to give part or all of the money to charity. An example of this is Paul Collingwood's 2007 benefit with Durham County Cricket Club. Dodger Whysall
William Wilfrid Whysall (31 October 1887 – 11 November 1930), generally known as "Dodger" Whysall, was an English professional cricketer who played for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club from 1910 to 1930, and in four Test cricket, Test matches for England cricket team, England from 1925 to 1930. He was born at Woodborough, Nottinghamshire, and died in a Nottingham hospital. Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863.
