François Frédéric Campana
Francesco Federico Campana (15 February 1771 in Turin, Peveragno or Cuneo – 16 February 1807 in Ostrołęka) was an Italian général de brigade who served in the armies of Napoleon I of France. Life Previously in Piedmontese service, he began his career in the French Revolutionary Army operating in Italy (known as the armée d'Italie) and became aide de camp to general Victor. He fought in the 1795 campaign against the Austro-Sardinians and was wounded at the Battle of Loano. He became prefect of Marengo in 1803 and, after being promoted to General de brigade in 1805, fought in the campaigns of 1805, 1806 and 1807. He was killed in the Battle at Ostrołęka in 1807. The Battle of Loano occurred on 23–24 November 1795 during the War of the First Coalition. The French Army of Italy led by Barthélemy Schérer defeated the combined Austrian and Sardinian forces under Olivier, Count of Wallis. Context In September 1795, General of Division Schérer replaced François Kellermann in command of the Army of Italy. Facing the French were 30,000 Austrians and 12,000 Piedmontese under the overall command of Feldzeugmeister (FZM) Joseph Nikolaus De Vins and Benedetto of Savoy, Duke of Chablais. Relations between the Austrians and the Piedmontese remained touchy, even though the latter force was led by an Austrian officer, Feldmarschal-Leutnant Michelangelo Colli. Marengo (department)
Marengo was a department of the French Consulate and of the First French Empire in present-day Italy. It was named after the Marengo plain near Alessandria to commemorate the eponymous French victory. It was formed in 1802, when the Subalpine Republic (formerly the mainland portion of the Kingdom of Sardinia) was directly annexed to France. Its capital was Alessandria. Initially it comprised the former Piedmontese provinces of Alessandria, Casale, Tortona, Voghera and Bobbio. Following the annexation of the Ligurian Republic to France in 1805, Voghera, Bobbio and Tortona passed to the newly created Department of Genoa, while the Department of Marengo acquired Asti, previously in the Department of Tanaro.
