François-Xavier-Ovide Méthot
François-Xavier-Ovide Méthot (September 19, 1843 – October 19, 1908) was a Quebec farmer and political figure. He represented Nicolet in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1871 to 1876 and in the House of Commons of Canada as an Independent Conservative member from 1877 to 1884. He was born in Quebec City in 1843, the son of François-Xavier Méthot, and studied at the Séminaire de Québec. He married his cousin Clara, the daughter of Antoine-Prosper Méthot, in 1864. Méthot was a farmer at Saint-Pierre-les-Becquets and served as mayor there from 1868 to 1872. In 1871, he was elected to the legislative assembly of the province in Nicolet as a Conservative; he was reelected in 1875 but his election was declared invalid by the Quebec Superior Court in June 1876. He did not run again in the subsequent by-election but was elected to the federal parliament in an 1877 by-election after the then-sitting member was named to the Legislative Council of Quebec. Legislative Assembly Of The Province Of Canada
The Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada was the lower house of the legislature for the Province of Canada, which consisted of the former provinces of Lower Canada, then known as Canada East and later the province of Quebec, and Upper Canada, then known as Canada West and later the province of Ontario. It was created by The Union Act of 1840. Canada East and Canada West each elected 42 members to the assembly. The upper house of the legislature was called the Legislative Council. The first session of parliament began in Kingston in Canada West in 1841. The second parliament and the first sessions of the third parliament were held in Montreal. Gustave-Adolphe-Narcisse Turcotte (November 19, 1848 – October 4, 1918) was a Quebec physician and political figure. He represented Nicolet in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1907 to 1911. His name also appears as Gustave-Adolphe Turcotte. He was born in Trois-Rivières, Canada East in 1848, the son of Joseph-Édouard Turcotte and Flore Buteau, and was educated at the Jesuit Collège Saint-Marie in Montreal and the Séminaire Saint-Joseph in Trois-Rivières. Turcotte served as registrar for Nicolet County. He ran unsuccessfully to represent Nicolet in the House of Commons in 1877 and 1878, losing to François-Xavier-Ovide Méthot each time. Turcotte was elected in a 1907 by-election held after Charles Ramsay Devlin resigned his seat to become a member of the Quebec cabinet. Antoine-Prosper Méthot
Antoine-Prosper Méthot (1804 – July 7, 1871) was a Quebec notary and political figure. He was born Antoine-Prosper Méthotte at Pointe-aux-Trembles, Lower Canada in 1804. Méthot studied at the Petit Séminaire de Québec, apprenticed as a notary, received his commission in 1829 and set up practice at Saint-Pierre-les-Becquets. He also served as postmaster there. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Nicolet in 1844. Méthot died at Saint-Pierre-les-Becquets in 1871.
