François-Louis Français
François-Louis Français (1814–1897), also known as Louis Français, was a French painter, lithographer and illustrator who became one of the most commercially successful landscape painters of the 19th century. A former pupil of Jean Gigoux, Gigoux, he began his career by studying lithography and wood engraving, becoming a prolific illustrator and print-maker. His work as an illustrator is to be found in around forty books and numerous magazines from the late 1830s to the 1860s. Jean Gigoux
Jean François Gigoux (6 January 1806, Besançon – 11 December 1894, Paris) was a French painter, lithographer, illustrator and art collector. Biography His father, Claude Étienne Gigoux, was a blacksmith, originally from Seveux (Haute-Saône). He began his artistic studies at the , then transferred to the École des Beaux-Arts of Paris in 1828, where he studied with Théodore Géricault and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, who helped him finance a study trip to Italy. In 1831, he had his debut at the Salon. In 1833, he became a contributor to '' Le Magasin pittoresque''. Two years later, he created several hundred woodcuts for ''Gil Blas'' by Alain-René Lesage, which brought him a great deal of notoriety. He was named a Chevalier in the Legion of Honour in 1842. The Salon (french: Salon), or rarely Paris Salon (French: ''Salon de Paris'' ), beginning in 1667 was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The Exposition Universelle of 1855 was an International Exhibition held on the Champs-Élysées in Paris from 15 May to 15 November 1855. Karl Girardet (born Charles Girardet; 7 May 1813, in Le Locle – 24 April 1871, in Versailles) was a Swiss painter and illustrator, who lived and worked mostly in Paris. Jean-Jacques Bourassé (22 December 1813, Ste.-Maure (Indre-et-Loire), France—4 October 1872, Tours) was a French Roman Catholic priest, archaeologist and historian. He made his preparatory studies for the priesthood in Paris. In 1835, he taught the natural sciences at the preparatory seminary of Tours, where he began a course of archaeology that soon attracted attention. The results achieved by him in a comparatively new field of research were such as to entitle him to be considered a veritable pioneer in France of the science of Christian archaeology. Célestin-François Nanteuil-Lebœuf, known as Célestin Nanteuil, (11 July 1813 – 6 September 1873) was a French painter, engraver and illustrator closely tied to the Romantic movement in France. He was born in Rome of French parents who were part of Joseph Bonaparte's entourage. Henri Charles Antoine Baron (23 June 1816, in Besançon – 11 September 1885, in Geneva) was a French genre painter, engraver and illustrator. Biography He studied art with Jean Gigoux, who heavily influenced his work. His debut at the Salon came in 1840. He would exhibit there frequently and win numerous medals. In 1846, the Duke of Aumale commissioned him to paint a decorative panel, depicting Chantilly in the 16th century, for the Duke's room at the Château de Chantilly. Four years later, his painting of a scene from the ballet '' Les Noces de Gamache'', by Louis Milon, was purchased by the state. His regular trips to Italy inspired many of his works. Antoine Johannot, known commonly as Tony Johannot (9 November 1803 – 4 August 1852), was a French engraver, illustrator and painter. Biography He was born in Offenbach am Main. His father, François Johannot (c. 1760–1838), owned a silk factory in Germany, where the family had fled after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He was a painter who was involved in the development of lithography in France. The two older brothers of Tony, Charles and Alfred, were engravers, and Alfred also worked as a painter and draughtsman.
