Franklin H. Westervelt
Franklin Herbert Westervelt ( – ) was an American engineer, computer scientist, and educator at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. Westervelt received degrees in Mathematics, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. He attained his PhD in 1961. He was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan and an Associate Director at the U-M Computing Center. He was involved in early studies on how to use computers in engineering education. Biography He was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan on to Herbert Oleander Westervelt and Dorothy Ulbright. From 1965 to 1970 he was Project Director for the ARPA sponsored CONCOMP (Research in Conversational Use of Computers) Project. IBM Audio Response Units
The IBM 7770 and IBM 7772 Audio Response Units are an early form of interactive voice response (IVR) technology. They allowed users to interact directly with an IBM Mainframe using only a touch-tone telephone or a terminal which could generate tones. They are notable for being part of a number of ''first of a kind'' IT solutions and also for enabling what is described as the "worlds first talking computer". Despite these products being considered at one point the "industry standard" with up to a 90% market share, IBM did not develop any new products to replace them.
