Frankie Gómez
Jesús Francisco "Frankie" Gómez (born February 4, 1992) is an American former professional boxer. In 2010, Gómez signed with Oscar De La Hoya's company Golden Boy Promotions. Frankie was trained by five-time Futch-Condon Award, Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach (boxing), Freddie Roach. Amateur career Gomez began boxing as an 8-year old and had an outstanding amateur record of 120–8. In 2007 he took the Junior Olympic National Championship and Gold at the Cadet World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Gómez won the U-17 2008 Cadet World Championships in the Light Welterweight division. In 2009 he became the United States national amateur boxing light welterweight champions, U.S.A. Amateur National Champion at age 17 beating National Golden Gloves winner José Benavidez of Phoenix. Welterweight
Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Etymology The first known instance of the term is from 1831, meaning "heavyweight horseman," later "boxer or wrestler of a certain weight" by 1896. 2009 World Amateur Boxing Championships
The 2009 AIBA World Boxing Championships were held in Milan, Italy, from September 1, 2009 to September 12, 2009, in the Mediolanum Forum. It was the biggest World Championships in AIBA history. The competition was under the supervision of the world's governing body for amateur boxing, the AIBA. Originally, Cameroon, Trinidad and Tobago and Uzbekistan each expressed interest in hosting the championships. However, they did not submit a final application and were therefore withdrawn from the running. This left Italy and South Korea remaining, who were the final two countries in contention during the bidding process to host the 2009 championships. The city of Milan in Italy was then chosen to host the competition. Vernon Paris (born January 5, 1988) is an American professional boxer who fights at light welterweight. He had three fights result in no contests because he tested positive for marijuana at the post-fight drug tests. Personal life Paris grew up in Detroit, Michigan as a troubled youth. He was involved with gangs and committed petty crimes, which culminated in a shooting on the city's northwest side on the evening of July 25, 2006.
