Frankie Figueroa
Francisco Figueroa Jr. (born June 13, 1978) is a professional boxer from Santurce, Puerto Rico and grew up in the Bronx, New York City, USA. Nicknamed "El Gato", Figueroa has been featured numerous times on ESPN2 and HBO fights. On 17 August 2005 he defeated Hector Alejandro Jr. for the New York State Light Welterweight Title. He also fought a powerhouse bout at Madison Square Garden against another undefeated contender, Joey Rios, where he successfully defended the title. Figueroa fought Emanuel "The Drunken Master" Augustus, in which he won on a controversial split decision, on the undercard of the Roy Jones Jr. vs. Joe Calzaghe fight at Madison Square Garden on 8 November 2008. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 pounds. The first champion of this weight class was Pinky Mitchell in 1946, though he was only awarded his championship by a vote of the readers of the ''Boxing Blade'' magazine. There was not widespread acceptance of this new weight division in its early years, and the New York State Athletic Commission withdrew recognition of it in 1930. A veteran of the sport for over twenty years, he is a former world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBO light welterweight title from 1999 to 2000, and the IBF welterweight title in 2012. The North American Boxing Federation (NABF) is a not-for-profit regional sanctioning body that awards regional boxing titles. It is a boxing federation within the World Boxing Council (WBC). History The WBC established the NABF in 1969 as part of its creation of a variety of regional boxing federations.
