Frank Van Straten
Frank Van Straten (born 14 May 1936) is an Australian performing arts historian, author and former director of the Performing Arts Museum. Van Straten was the first archivist of the Performing Arts Museum (now Australian Performing Arts Collection), at the Arts Centre Melbourne, and its director from 1984 until 1993. Between 1986 and 2001, he researched and presented ABC Local Radio's Nostalgia segment, broadcast on Melbourne's 774 and the ABC Victorian Regional Network. In 2002, Van Straten acted as the Historical Consultant for Graeme Murphy's 'dance musical' '' Tivoli'', performed by the Sydney Dance Company, which premiered at the State Theatre, Arts Centre, Melbourne. Van Straten has served on the board of the National Theatre, Melbourne. He has also served on the judging panels of the Green Room Awards and Helpmann Awards. Green Room Awards
The Green Room Awards are peer awards which recognise excellence in cabaret, dance, drama, fringe theatre, musical theatre and opera in Melbourne. The awards were started in 1982 when Blair Edgar and Steven Tandy formed the Green Room Awards Association. The inaugural awards ceremony was held in 1984 at the Melbourne Concert Hall. Performing Arts Collection
The Australian Performing Arts Collection at Arts Centre Melbourne, formerly known as Performing Arts Museum (PAM), is the largest specialist performing arts collection in Australia, with over 780,000 items relating to the history of circus, dance, music, opera and theatre in Australia and of Australian performers overseas. History Established in 1975, the collection was originally known as Performing Arts Museum (PAM) and was planned as part of the Melbourne Arts Centre while that building was being complete. Roy Grounds had been appointed to design the Melbourne Arts Centre in 1959, and although he is said to have intended for a performing arts museum to be part of the building, he did not include a space for one in his original design brief.
