Frank S. Pepper
Frank Stuart Pepper (8 February 1910 – 11 December 1988) was a British writer of comics and story papers for Amalgamated Press, best known as the creator of ''Roy of the Rovers'' and '' Captain Condor''. Knockout (UK Comics)
''Knockout'' may refer to one of two British comics. The original series, published by the Amalgamated Press (later Fleetway Publications), started on 4 March 1939 and ended on 16 February 1963, when it merged with '' Valiant''. The second series, published by IPC Magazines, ran from 12 June 1971 to 23 June 1973, when it merged with ''Whizzer and Chips''. First series The first series, titled ''Knockout Comics'', was launched by editor Percy Clarke and sub-editor Leonard Matthews in 1939 to compete with ''The Dandy'' and ''The Beano'' (launched by DC Thomson in 1937 and 1938 respectively). Like its rivals, it featured a mixture of humour and adventure strips and illustrated prose stories. Derek Arthur William Birnage (13 June 1913 – 18 January 2004) was a British comics editor and writer and newspaper editor, best known as the founding editor of the weekly sports comic ''Tiger'' and as a writer of ''Roy of the Rovers''. He was born in Wandsworth, South London, on 13 June 1913, the son of Frank Birnage, editor of the conservative evangelical newspaper the '' Sunday Companion'', and was educated at Sutton Valence School in Kent. After leaving school he joined the comics department of Amalgamated Press under Reg Eves, initially working on '' Schooldays''. Dan Dare
Dan Dare is a British science fiction comic hero, created by illustrator Frank Hampson who also wrote the first stories. Dare appeared in the ''Eagle'' comic story ''Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future'' from 1950 to 1967 (and subsequently in reprints), and dramatised seven times a week on Radio Luxembourg (1951–1956). The stories were set in the late 1990s, but the dialogue and manner of the characters is reminiscent of British war films of the 1950s. Dan Dare has been described as "Biggles in Space" and as the British equivalent of Buck Rogers. Dan Dare was distinguished by its long, complex storylines, snappy dialogue and meticulously illustrated comic-strip artwork by Hampson and other artists, including Harold Johns, Don Harley, Bruce Cornwell, Greta Tomlinson, Frank Bellamy, and Keith Watson. Eagle (comic)
''Eagle'' was a British children's comics periodical, first published from 1950 to 1969, and then in a relaunched format from 1982 to 1994. It was founded by Marcus Morris, an Anglican vicar from Lancashire. Morris edited a Southport parish magazine called ''The Anvil'', but felt that the church was not communicating its message effectively. Simultaneously disillusioned with contemporary children's literature, he and ''Anvil'' artist Frank Hampson created a dummy comic based on Christian values. Morris proposed the idea to several Fleet Street publishers, with little success, until Hulton Press took it on. Following a huge publicity campaign, the first issue of ''Eagle'' was released in April 1950. Revolutionary in its presentation and content, it was enormously successful; the first issue sold about 900,000 copies. Sir Edward George Warris Hulton (29 November 1906 – 8 October 1988) was a British magazine publisher and writer. Early life Hulton was born to Sir Edward Hulton, 1st Baronet, a newspaper publisher and racehorse owner originally from Manchester, and his second wife, music hall artist, actress and singer Millicent Warris, born Fanny Elizabeth Warriss or Wariss, also known by the stage name Millie Lindon. Educated at Harrow School, Hulton went up to Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1925 but left in December 1926 without a degree. Business and politics Hulton founded the Hulton Press in 1937, buying '' Farmers' Weekly''.
