Frank Findlay
Frank Findlay (1884 – 31 March 1945) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. Findlay was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1884. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1902. In his younger days, he was a successful athlete, including the champion for decathlon and high and long jump in Northland. From 1921, he was a baker in Hamilton and belonged to the Presbyterian church, where he was an elder. He was active with the YMCA. He was on the Hamilton Borough Council for 12 years and served as Deputy Mayor for some time. In the , he defeated the incumbent, Charles Barrell from Labour, in the Hamilton electorate. He suffered a heart attack while playing tennis and died in Waikato Hospital some days later on 31 March 1945. He died while holding office as an MP. 1945 Hamilton By-election
The 1945 Hamilton by-election was a by-election held during the 27th New Zealand Parliament in the Waikato electorate of Hamilton. The by-election occurred following the death of MP Frank Findlay and was won by Hilda Ross, both of the National Party. Background Findlay, who was first elected to represent Hamilton in 1943, died on 31 March 1945. This triggered the Hamilton by-election, which was contested by four candidates. Hilda Ross contested the election for the National Party. She had served as a member of the Hospital Board and Council in Hamilton for several years and was at the time of the election the Deputy-Mayor. Hilda Ross
Dame Grace Hilda Cuthbertha Ross (née Nixon; 6 July 1883 – 6 March 1959), known as Hilda Ross, was a New Zealand politician for the National Party and an activist. Early years Nixon was born at Auckland to Adam (a fireman who later became a marine engineer) and Zillah (Johnson) Nixon. Her family lived in both Sydney and Auckland, and she received her education in these cities. She trained as a music teacher and later conducted the Hamilton City Choral Operatic Society. Family In 1904, she married Harry Campbell Manchester Ross (died 1940) in Auckland. Her husband founded a furnishing company, "Barton and Ross". ''The Evening Post'' (8 February 1865 – 6 July 2002) was an afternoon metropolitan daily newspaper based in Wellington, New Zealand. It was founded in 1865 by Dublin-born printer, newspaper manager and leader-writer Henry Blundell, who brought his large family to New Zealand in 1863.
