Frank-Volker Eichhorn
Frank-Volker Eichhorn (13 December 1947 – 17 January 1978) was a German composer. Life Eichhorn studied mathematics and physics to become a teacher.'' Musik und Gesellschaft '' 28 (1978) 3, . He also worked as a teacher for two years, but began studying at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" on the side. He eventually gave up his teaching job as a maths and physics teacher and devoted himself entirely to music, becoming a ''Meisterschüler'' of Günter Kochan at the Musikhochschule and a teacher of composition there. He founded the concert series ''Kammerstudio'' at the Haus des Lehrers in Berlin. In 1975, he was awarded the Hanns Eisler Prize. In 1978, he received a first prize in the chamber music competition of the Dresden Music Festival. His compositions were published by Edition Peters and were performed among others by the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin and the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra. Günter Kochan
Günter Kochan (2 October 1930 – 22 February 2009) was a German composer. He studied with Boris Blacher and was a master student for composition with Hanns Eisler. From 1967 until his retirement in 1991, he worked as professor for musical composition at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler". He taught master classes in composition at the Academy of Music and the Academy of Arts, Berlin. He was also secretary of the Music Section of the Academy of Arts from 1972 to 1974 and vice-president of the from 1977 to 1982. Kochan is one of eleven laureates to have been awarded the National Prize of the GDR four times. In addition, he received composition prizes in the US and Eastern Europe. Haus Des Lehrers
(German for ''House of the teacher'') is a building in Berlin, located near Alexanderplatz, built between 1962 and 1964 under the German Democratic Republic. Its most notable feature is a mural wrapping around the entire building and extending between the second and fifth above-ground floors. Designed in the style of Mexican mural art by artist Walter Womacka, it is titled ''Unser Leben'' ("Our Life") and depicts various occupational groups of and aspects of life in the GDR. Adjacent to the building is a two-story congress hall, known since November 2003 as Berliner Congress Center. Between 2003 and 2011, the annual Chaos Communication Congress was hosted there. Hanns Eisler Prize
The Hanns Eisler Prize was an East-German music award, named after the composer Hanns Eisler. It was awarded by Radio DDR – with advisory participation of the music section of the Akademie der Künste der DDR in Berlin (East) and the (VDK) – and on the occasion of his 70th birthday on 6 July 1968, the first time in the ballroom of the . The Hanns Eisler Prize was endowed with 10,000 marks and was one of the most renowned music prizes in the German Democratic Republic. Statute The statutes stated: "The Hanns Eisler Prize shall be awarded for new compositions and musicological works which make outstanding contributions to the socialist musical culture of the GDR". The Dresden Music Festival (German: Dresdner Musikfestspiele) is an annual music festival which takes place in Dresden, Germany in May and June. Although classical music, including contemporary classical music, forms the core of its performances, world music, jazz, and dance are also presented. Edition Peters
Edition Peters is a classical music publisher founded in Leipzig, Germany in 1800. History The company came into being on 1 December 1800 when the Viennese composer Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754–1812) and the local organist Ambrosius Kühnel (1770–1813) opened a concern in Leipzig known as the "Bureau de Musique." Along with publishing, the new firm included an engraving and printing works and a retail shop for selling printed music and instruments. Among its earliest publications were collections of chamber music works by Haydn and Mozart. When Hoffmeister departed for Vienna in 1805, the firm had already issued several works by the then new Viennese composer, Ludwig van Beethoven (Opp. 19-22; 39-42). The MDR-Sinfonieorchester (in English, MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra) is a German radio orchestra based in Leipzig. It is the radio orchestra of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the public broadcaster for the German states of Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The VEB Deutsche Schallplatten was the monopolistic music publisher in the German Democratic Republic from the 1950s until the 1980s. On August 12, 1946, the German singer and actor Ernst Busch got permission by Soviet military administration to institute a publishing house for music. On February 3, 1947, Busch started the company ''Lied Der Zeit GmbH'' with the music labels Amiga, Eterna and Lied Der Zeit. On April 1, 1953, the private GmbH-company had to change to a state-controlled VEB (Volkseigener Betrieb, "People-owned enterprise").
