Franciszek Sulik
Franciszek (Frank) Sulik (1908– 16 July 1997) was a Polish-Australian chess master. Career 1934–1938 Before World War II, he lived in Lviv. In 1934, he tied for 2nd-3rd with Henryk Friedman, behind Stepan Popel, in the Lviv championship. In 1935, he tied for 8-9th in Warsaw (3rd POL-ch; Savielly Tartakower won). In 1936, he took 2nd, behind Izak Schächter, in the Lviv-ch. In 1938, he won the Lviv championship. He played for Poland in Chess Olympiads, and won two team silver medals. * In 1936, at first reserve board in the unofficial Olympiad in Munich (+2 −3 =2); * In 1939, at reserve board in the 8th Olympiad in Buenos Aires (+4 −2 =1). 1939–1941 In September 1939, when World War II broke out, Sulik, along with many other participants of the 8th Chess Olympiad decided to stay in Argentina. Hlyniany
Hlyniany (, ; ; ) is a small city in Lviv Raion, Lviv Oblast (region) of Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Hlyniany urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: . History In 1340, together with whole Red Ruthenia, Hlyniany became part of the Kingdom of Poland, where it remained until 1772 (see Partitions of Poland). The village, called Gliniany, belonged to Lwow Land of the Ruthenian Voivodeship. It received a town charter in 1397, from Voivode of Sandomierz and Starosta of Red Ruthenia, Jan z Tarnowa. In 1425, King Wladyslaw Jagiello confirmed Gliniany's charter. In summer 1537, it was one of centers of the so-called Chicken War. Gideon Ståhlberg
Anders Gideon Tom Ståhlberg (26 January 1908 – 26 May 1967) was a Swedish chess player. He was among the inaugural recipients of the title International Grandmaster from FIDE in 1950. He won the Swedish Chess Championship of 1927, became Nordic champion in 1929, and held it until 1939. Ståhlberg came to fame when he won matches against star players Rudolf Spielmann and Aron Nimzowitsch in 1933 and 1934 respectively, and came third (after Alexander Alekhine) in Dresden 1936, and second (after Reuben Fine) in Stockholm 1937. In 1938 he drew a match against Paul Keres.
