Francisco Santiago
Francisco Santiago Santiago (January 29, 1889 – September 28, 1947) was a Filipino musician, sometimes called ''The Father of Kundiman Art Song''. Life Santiago was born in Santa Maria, Bulacan, Philippines, to musically minded peasant parents, Felipe Santiago and Maria Santiago. In 1908, his first composition, ''Purita'', was dedicated to the first Carnival Queen, Pura Villanueva, who later married the distinguished scholar Teodoro Kalaw. He studied at the University of the Philippines (UP) Conservatory of Music, in its original campus in Manila, obtaining a degree in Piano in 1921, and a degree in Science and Composition in 1922. He went to the United States to pursue further education. He first obtained his master's degree at the American Conservatory of Music in June 1923, and finally a Doctorate degree at the Chicago Musical School in August 1924. Filipino Name
Filipinos have various naming customs. They most commonly blend the older Spanish system and Anglo-American conventions, where there is a distinction between the "Christian name" and the "surname". Col. Antonino Ramirez Buenaventura (May 4, 1904 – January 25, 1996) was a Filipino composer, conductor, and teacher. Biography Antonino Buenaventura was born on May 4, 1904 in Baliuag, Bulacan. He was born in a family of musicians; his father Lucino Buenaventura was a musician at the Spanish Artillery Band in Intramuros. He studied under Nicanor Abelardo at the University of the Philippines Diliman Conservatory of Music and graduated in 1932 with a Teacher's Diploma in Music, major in Science and Composition and became an assistant instructor at the Conservatory. Piano Concerto (Santiago)
Francisco Santiago's Piano Concerto in B-flat minor was written in 1924 as his doctoral dissertation while he was studying at Chicago. It was premiered at Chicago on June 15, 1924, as a part of Santiago's graduation recital. He was assisted by his teacher Heniot Levy, who played the accompaniment. The premiere in Chicago and subsequent performances in Manila in 1925 were positively received; Santiago's professors and critics locally and abroad hailed the work as the composer's masterpiece. The Manila North Cemetery (Spanish: ''Cementerio del Norte'') is one of the oldest cemeteries in Metro Manila, Philippines. Manila Symphony Orchestra
The Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is one of the oldest orchestras in Asia. Founded by Alexander Lippay in 1926, the orchestra has played a major role in Philippine history, including acting as a symbol of resistance during the Second World War. The Japanese occupation of the Philippines (Filipino: ''Pananakop ng mga Japones sa Filipinas''; ja, 日本のフィリピン占領, Nihon no Firipin Senryō) occurred between 1942 and 1945, when Imperial Japan occupied the Commonwealth of the Philippines during World War II. Jose Estella
Jose Estella (1870 - 6 April 1943) was a Filipino composer and conductor who was known for his title as the "''Philippine Waltz King".'' Besides composing waltzes, he also became one of the major contributors of localizing Spanish zarzuelas from 1890s to 1900s. Biography Born in 1870, Jose Estella studied at the Madrid Conservatory and after graduating, returned to the Philippines to pursue a career in music. In Manila and Cebu, he conducted several orchestras and was director of the Rizal Orchestra, founded in 1898. Estella also became involved with a plagiarism case in 1939 with Francisco Santiago over which Estella complains that Santiago copied his Campanadas de Gloria but in the end of the investigation, it was revealed that they both get inspiration from the same folk song named "Leron Leron Sinta".
