Francis Russell (January 12, 1910 in Boston, Massachusetts – March 20, 1989 in Falmouth, Massachusetts) was an American author specializing in American history and historical figures. Russell is best known for his book on Warren G. Harding, ''The Shadow of Blooming Grove''. He graduated from Bowdoin College, and from Harvard University, with a master's degree in 1937. Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford (23 July 1765 – 2 March 1802) was an English aristocrat and Whig politician, responsible for much of the development of central Bloomsbury. Life Francis Russell, eldest son of Francis Russell, Marquess of Tavistock (died 1767), by his wife, Elizabeth (died 1768), daughter of William Keppel, 2nd Earl of Albemarle, was born at Woburn Abbey and baptized on 20 August 1765 at St Giles in the Fields. In January 1771 he succeeded his grandfather as Duke of Bedford, and was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, afterwards spending nearly two years in foreign travel. Whilst abroad in 1784 he was involved in a menage a trois with Charles Maynard, second Viscount Maynard, and his wife Anne, Lady Maynard. Russell was also an alternative cancer treatment advocate who promoted the idea that cancer is caused by excessive consumption of meat, alcohol, coffee and tea. Francis William Russell (3 June 1800 – 30 August 1871) was the Liberal MP for Limerick City from 1852 until his death. He was the son of John Norris Russell a Limerick merchant and miller, and brother of Richard Russell, who died one day before him in Limerick. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and entered the Irish Bar in 1824. Major-General Francis Shirley Russell (1840 – 18 March 1912) was a British soldier and politician. Born into a prominent Aberdeenshire family, Russell was educated at Radley College, and then at Balliol College, Oxford, from which he graduated in 1862. He then joined the 14th Hussars as cornet on 6 February 1863, was promoted to lieutenant on 23 August 1864, and to captain on 13 June 1868. From 1869 to 1870 he served as an aide-de-camp in Ireland, and from 1873 to 1874 in the Ashanti Campaign. In 1875, Russell joined the staff of the Royal Military College, as an inspector in tactics, then in 1878 he moved to the Intelligence Branch. In 1879, he served in the Zulu War, then in 1880/81 in the First Boer War. In 1885, he was promoted to colonel. Francis Charles Hastings Russell, 9th Duke of Bedford KG (16 October 1819 – 14 January 1891) was an English politician and agriculturalist. Life Known as Hastings, the 9th Duke was born in Curzon Street, London, the son of Major-General Lord George William Russell and Lady William Russell, and the grandson of John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford. He was commissioned into the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1838, retiring in 1844. He was Liberal Member of Parliament for Bedfordshire from 1847 until 1872, when he succeeded to the dukedom on the death of his cousin William Russell, 8th Duke of Bedford, and took his place in the House of Lords. In 1886, he broke with the party leadership of William Ewart Gladstone over the First Irish Home Rule Bill and became a Unionist. Life Russell was the youngest son of an attorney, town clerk in Basingstoke, Hampshire, and a younger brother of the Rev. Sambro(o)ke Russell, the antiquarian. He was articled to his father, and then practised as a solicitor on his own. Around 1762 James Smith-Stanley, Lord Strange as its Chancellor brought him in to do legal work for the Duchy of Lancaster. Russell strived to put the records in order, and gave up other work. Francis Russell is a British travel writer, historian and art expert. He was educated at the Dragon School, Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford, where he read history. Russell's maternal grandfather was the chemist and mountaineer George Ingle Finch; both his father, the botanist and Arctic explorer Robert Scott Russell, and his brother were also mountaineers. Russell joined Christie's as a specialist in 1972, initially in the Department of Old Master Drawings and later in Old Master Pictures. He is a former Head of the International Old Master Picture Department. Francis Russell, Marquess of Tavistock (27 September 1739 – 22 March 1767) was a British politician and the eldest son of the 4th Duke of Bedford and his second wife Lady Gertrude Leveson-Gower. From 1759 to 1761, he sat in the Irish House of Commons as Whig Member of Parliament for Armagh Borough and then in the British House of Commons for Bedfordshire until 1767. He was elected as a Bailiff to the board of the Bedford Level Corporation in 1761, a position he held until his death.
