Francis Assikinack
Francis Assikinack (18241863) was a 19th-century Ojibwe historian. Assikinack was born on Manitoulin Island. He was raised learning only Ojibwe and did not learn English until after enrolling at Upper Canada College in 1840. His father Jean-Baptiste Assiginack was a prominent leader of the Ojibwe. Assikinack had tried to get approval to study medicine but the government did not support him in this course. Assikinack worked for the Canadian Indian department. Ojibwe People
The Ojibwe, Ojibwa, Chippewa, or Saulteaux are an Anishinaabe people in what is currently southern Canada, the northern Midwestern United States, and Northern Plains. According to the U.S. census, in the United States Ojibwe people are one of the largest tribal populations among Native American peoples. In Canada, they are the second-largest First Nations population, surpassed only by the Cree. They are one of the most numerous Indigenous Peoples north of the Rio Grande. The Ojibwe population is approximately 320,000 people, with 170,742 living in the United States , and approximately 160,000 living in Canada. In the United States, there are 77,940 mainline Ojibwe; 76,760 Saulteaux; and 8,770 Mississauga, organized in 125 bands. In Canada, they live from western Quebec to eastern British Columbia. Manitoulin Island
Manitoulin Island is an island in Lake Huron, located within the borders of the Canadian province of Ontario, in the bioregion known as Laurentia. Jean-Baptiste Assiginack
Jean-Baptiste Assiginack (1768 - 3 November 1866) was an Odawa leader in the early 19th-century. He was also known as "Blackbird," a literal translation of his name in the Anishinaabe language. Early Life and War of 1812 Assiginack is thought to have been at what is now Harbor Springs, Michigan. Early in life he studied at a Sulpician school at the mission of Oka in Lower Canada where he became a Catholic. He seems to have fought with the British at Michilimackinac and Praries du Chien during the War of 1812. In July 1813, Assiginack and Captain Matthew Elliott led a band of Ottawas to the Niagara peninsula. There they added to the British infantry and fought in the Beaver Dams battle. Possibly, Assiginack was subsequently honored with medals for his role in the war. Starting in 1815 he was an interpreter for the British Government on Drummond Island. The Wiikwemkoong First Nation is a First Nation on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario. The Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (nicknamed Wiky, previously named Wikwemikong) is the First Nation reserve in the northeast of Manitoulin Island in Manitoulin District, Ontario, Canada. Wiikwemkoong is an unceded Indigenous reserve in Canada, which means that it has not "relinquished title to its land to the government by treaty or otherwise." The local Ojibwe placename is (Manitoulin dialect; notice the vowel dropping) with the locative ''-ong'' ('at') form of 'bay with a gently sloping bottom'. The spelling is from dialects spoken elsewhere (or in earlier times) that retain the ''i''. The initial element occurs in other forms as 'bay'; the final element ''-mik'' cannot be for 'beaver' (its local form is ''mik''), a folk etymology that violates the rules for Algonquian stem formation.
