Francesco Squarcione
Francesco Squarcione (''c.'' 1395 – after 1468) was an Italian artist from Padua. His pupils included Andrea Mantegna (with whom he had many legal battles), Cosimo Tura and Carlo Crivelli. There are only two works signed by him: the ''Madonna and Child'' (now in Berlin) and the Lazara Altarpiece (now in Padua). Biography Squarcione, whose original vocation was tailoring, appears to have had a remarkable enthusiasm for ancient art, and a faculty for acting. Squarcione was interested in ancient Rome; he travelled in Italy, and perhaps Greece, collecting antique statues, reliefs, vases, and other works of art, forming a collection of such works, making drawings from them himself, and throwing open his stores for others to study from. Based on this collection, he undertook works on commission for which his pupils no less than himself were made available. Basilica Del Carmine, Padua
The Basilica del Carmine is a 16th-century Roman Catholic church located on piazza Francesco Petrarca in Padua, region of Veneto, Italy. It was made a minor basilica in 1960 by pope John XXIII History The church and an attached monastery were founded by an order of Carmelite monks, hence the name. The order became established in Padua by the late 13th-century, and we have the first documentation of a church at the site by 1212. The adjacent monastery was refurbished in 1295, and the church was rebuilt in 1335 under the design of Lorenzo da Bologna. It was consecrated as ''Santa Maria del Carmine'' in 1446. In 1491, an earthquake nearly razed the building, requiring reconstruction in 1494. Andrea Bellunello, also known as Andrea di San Vito (1440 – 1506) was an Italian painter active in the early Renaissance period. He was born either in San Vito in the Friuli, or in Belluno. He was active in the Udine and surrounding region of Friuli. He worked with or under Francesco Squarcione and/or Bortolotto di Belluno. Pietro Calzetta ( fl. 1470–1500) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. He was son-in-law of Montagnana and a pupil of Squarcione. Francesco Verla (1470- circa 1521) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance period, active in Northern Italy. Biography He was born in Villaverla and died in Rovereto.
