Bill Foulkes
William Anthony Foulkes ( or ; 5 January 1932 – 25 November 2013) was an English footballer who played for Manchester United in the Busby Babes teams of the 1950s, and also in the 1960s. His favoured position was centre-half. For Manchester United, he played 688 games which places him at number 4 on the all-time list of appearances behind Ryan Giggs, Bobby Charlton and Paul Scholes. He made 3 appearances as a substitute. He also started in every single United game in the 1957–58, 1959–60 and 1964–65 seasons. He scored a total of 9 goals in his 18 seasons at United and helped the club win four First Division titles, one FA Cup and one European Cup. He was capped only once for England in 1955. After retiring as a player, he spent more than 20 years as a coach and manager at numerous clubs in England and overseas. George Foulkes, Baron Foulkes of Cumnock (born 21 January 1942) is a Scottish politician and life peer who served as Minister of State for Scotland from 2001 to 2002. A member of the Scottish Labour Party and Co-operative Party, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley, formerly South Ayrshire, from 1979 to 2005. He was later a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP), as one of the additional members for the Lothians region, from 2007 to 2011. Carly Foulkes (born August 4, 1988) is a Canadian model and actress who became known for appearing in a series of T-Mobile myTouch 4G television commercials, in which she often wore pink/magenta-and-white summer dresses. Helena Grace Foulkes (née Buonanno; born July 18, 1964) is an American businesswoman and politician. She unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for Governor of Rhode Island in the 2022 election and is the former Chief Executive Officer of Hudson's Bay Company. Early life and education The daughter of a lawyer, Helena Buonanno was born the eldest of five children. She grew up in Rhode Island and attended Lincoln School in Providence. George Ernest Foulkes (December 25, 1878 – December 13, 1960) was a United States representative from Michigan. Foulkes was born in Chicago and attended the public schools of Chicago. He graduated from the law department of Lake Forest University, Chicago, in 1900. He was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in the United States Treasury Department. He was special agent of the U.S. Treasury Department in charge of field service at New York City, El Paso, Texas, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1900–19. He moved to Hartford, Michigan, in 1920 and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a delegate to the Democratic state conventions in 1924, 1926, and 1928. William Isaiah Foulkes (29 May 1926 – 7 February 1979) was a Welsh international footballer, who played as an inside forward for Newcastle United, Southampton and Chester in the 1940s and 1950s, winning the FA Cup with Newcastle in 1952. Playing career Born in Merthyr Tydfil, he signed as a professional with Cardiff City in February 1945. He failed to break into the first team and in April 1948 he moved north to join Chester in the Third Division North. He soon became a regular selection at inside right laying on the crosses for Cam Burgess to score the goals. John Charles Griffiths Foulkes (22 March 1861 – 4 December 1935) served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia, as a member of the Legislative Council from 1894 to 1896 and as a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1902 to 1911. Foulkes was born in Llanyblodwel, Shropshire, England, a small village on the Welsh border. He attended Shrewsbury School before going on to St John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1884. Angela June Foulkes (born 1948) is a trade unionist and government official in New Zealand. Biography Foulkes was born in England and emigrated to New Zealand in 1973. She worked for ANZ Bank from 1973 to 1988, where she was a member of the negotiating team that won maternity leave for bank officers. She also held the position of president of the Bank Officers Union from 1982 to 1988. In 1988 she resigned her position at ANZ to become vice-president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions. In 1991 she was appointed secretary of the council. Foulkes has also served on the board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and as chair of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security's Advisory Panel. Annie Foulkes (24 March 1877 - 12 November 1962) was a Welsh writer and teacher of French. Her poetry anthology, ''Telyn y dydd'', became part of the curriculum in Welsh schools. Born in 1877 in Llanberis, the daughter of a writer and official of Dinorwig slate quarry, she was educated at Dr Williams School in Dolgellau and later at the Collège de Jeunes Filles in Saumur, France (1896–97). She taught French after graduating, teaching at Tregaron County School from 1898 to 1905, and Barry County School from 1905 to 1918. In 1918, she succeeded Robert Silyn Roberts as Executive Secretary of the Appointments Board of the University of Wales. Foulkes spent many years in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, where she was an associate of Thomas Jones and his literary circle, and it was Thomas who convinced Foulkes to compile an anthology of modern Welsh poetry, which was first published in 1918 with the title ''Telyn y dydd''.
