Foster Hewitt Broadcasting
Foster Hewitt Broadcasting Ltd was the Corporation, corporate entity of Toronto radio CJCL (AM), CKFH 1400. The station was created by Toronto Maple Leafs hockey broadcaster Foster Hewitt in 1951. The station was located near the legendary Maple Leaf Gardens and later moved down the bandwidth to 1430 kHz to become CKFH-AM 1430. The company was a co-owner of CFTO-TV in the 1960s and 1970s, and was an early co-owner of CTV Television Network, CTV during the network's period as a co-operative. The company ended with the sale of the station by Hewitt in 1980 to Telemedia, Telmed Communications Limited and the station was later renamed CHKT (AM), CJCL-AM 1430 in 1981 and all sports radio (FAN-1430) in 1992. CJCL (AM)
CJCL (590 AM, ''Sportsnet 590 The Fan'') is a Canadian sports radio station in Toronto, Ontario. Owned and operated by Rogers Sports & Media since 2002, CJCL's studios are located at the Rogers Building at Bloor and Jarvis in downtown Toronto, while its transmitters are located near Grimsby atop the Niagara Escarpment. It is the flagship station for the Toronto Blue Jays, and also airs games from the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Bisons and Buffalo Bills. CJCL is also a CBS Sports Radio affiliate. The Toronto Maple Leafs (officially the Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club and often referred to as the Leafs) are a professional ice hockey team based in Toronto. Foster Hewitt
Foster William Hewitt, (November 21, 1902 – April 21, 1985) was a Canadian radio broadcaster most famous for his play-by-play calls for ''Hockey Night in Canada''. He was the son of W. A. Hewitt, and the father of Bill Hewitt. Biography Early life and career Born in Toronto, Ontario, Hewitt attended Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto where he was a member of the Toronto chapter of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was a champion boxer in his student years, winning the intercollegiate title at 112 pounds. Hewitt developed an early interest in the radio and as a teenager accompanied his father, W. A. Hewitt, on a trip to Detroit, Michigan to see a demonstration of radio technology sponsored by General Electric. Maple Leaf Gardens
Maple Leaf Gardens is a historic building located at the northwest corner of Carlton Street and Church Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The building was initially constructed in 1931 as an arena to host ice hockey games, though it has since been reconstructed for other uses. Today, Maple Leaf Gardens is a multi-purpose facility, with Loblaws occupying retail space on the lower floors and an arena for Toronto Metropolitan University, known as Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens, occupying the top level. Telemedia
Telemedia was a Canadian media company, which had holdings in radio, television and magazine publishing. The company was launched in 1968 by Philippe de Gaspé Beaubien, when he purchased CKAC in Montreal from Power Corporation of Canada. CKAC remained the company's radio flagship for its entire existence. Telemedia was held privately until it became publicly traded in the late 1980s. CHKT (1430 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The station, owned by the Fairchild Group service, airs mainly Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese programs as well as weekend shows in the following languages: Cambodian, Filipino, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Lao, Macedonian, Polish, Punjabi, Russian, Thai and Vietnamese.
