Aragon is a census-designated place on the Tularosa River in Catron County, New Mexico, Catron County, New Mexico, United States. Demographics History Old Fort Tularosa Aragon is on the site of former Old Fort Tularosa , which was built in 1872 to protect the Apache Indian Agency from the Ojo Caliente, New Mexico, Ojo Caliente Band of Apaches. The fort was abandoned when the tribe was moved back to the Ojo Caliente reservation in 1874. A stockade was built on the site of the earlier fort in 1880 by Buffalo Soldiers led by Sergeant George Jordan (Medal of Honor), George Jordan. Battle Of Fort Tularosa
The Battle of Fort Tularosa occurred in May 1880 near the present-day town of Aragon in Catron County, New Mexico. In an ongoing campaign to keep from being forced to live on reservations, Chiricahua Apache warriors led by Victorio attacked Fort Tularosa north of San Francisco Plaza. Buffalo Soldiers from the United States Army's 9th Cavalry, led by Sergeant George Jordan, repulsed the attack. Background On May 13, 1880, Sergeant George Jordan marched a detachment of twenty-five soldiers from K Troop of the 9th Cavalry towards New Mexico with orders to protect Fort Tularosa from potential attack, escort provisions, establish a supply depot and protect local settlers. George Jordan (Medal Of Honor)
George Jordan (1847 – October 24, 1904) was a Buffalo Soldier in the United States Army and a recipient of America's highest military decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Indian Wars of the western United States. Biography Jordan joined the Army from Nashville, Tennessee after the Civil War, initially joining the 38th Infantry. By 1880 was serving as a Sergeant in Company K of the 9th Cavalry Regiment in New Mexico. On May 7, 1890, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Tularosa on May 14, 1880, and at Carrizo Canyon on August 12, 1881. He was also awarded the Certificate of Merit for his actions at the Carrizo Canyon engagement, which brought with it an additional $2 a month in extra pay. In 1887, Jordan was commended by the commander at Fort Robinson for capturing an escaped prisoner. Jordan reached the rank of First Sergeant before leaving the Army in 1897. Buffalo Soldier
Buffalo Soldiers originally were members of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed on September 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This nickname was given to the Black Cavalry by Native American tribes who fought in the Indian Wars. Ojo Caliente is an unincorporated community in Taos County, New Mexico, United States.
