Fort San Fernando De Las Barrancas
Fort San Fernando De Las Barrancas was a Spanish fort in what is now Memphis, Tennessee. Established in May 1795, the fort was erected with a garrison of 150 men to defend Spain, Spanish claims of the territory at the Chickasaw Bluff, Fourth Chickasaw Bluff. Although Spain renounced its claim to the area in Pinckney's Treaty in 1795, it occupied the fort until either 1797 or 1798, when the Spanish dismantled the fort and established Fort Esperanza across the river near modern Marion, Arkansas. Chickasaw Bluff
The Chickasaw Bluff is the high ground rising about above the Mississippi River flood plain between Fulton in Lauderdale County, Tennessee and Memphis in Shelby County, Tennessee. This elevation, shaped as four bluffs, is named for the Chickasaw people. Known in the 19th century as one of the Five Civilized Nations in the Southeast, they occupied much of this area in western Tennessee and Mississippi. By their control of the bluffs, they could impede French river traffic in the 18th century when the peoples were at war. Location The Chickasaw Bluffs were numbered by rivermen from one to four, starting from the north. Geology The Chickasaw Bluffs are a relatively recent feature. They were formed from pleistocene loess (wind-blown) silt. This loess can be as thick as 70 feet and it generally tapers off as one moves eastward. Pinckney's Treaty
Pinckney's Treaty, also known as the Treaty of San Lorenzo or the Treaty of Madrid, was signed on October 27, 1795 by the United States and Spain. It defined the border between the United States and Spanish Florida, and guaranteed the United States navigation rights on the Mississippi River. With this agreement, the first phase of the ongoing border dispute between the two nations in this region, commonly called the West Florida Controversy, came to a close. Thomas Pinckney negotiated the treaty for the United States and Don Manuel de Godoy represented Spain. It was presented to the United States Senate on February 26, 1796, and, after debate, was ratified on March 7, 1796.
