Fort Defiance (Lenoir, North Carolina)
Fort Defiance is a historic plantation house located near Lenoir, Caldwell County, North Carolina. The main block was built between 1788 and 1792, and is a two-story, frame structure measuring 28 feet by 40 feet. A wing was added in 1823. It was the home of Revolutionary War General William Lenoir. The property was transferred to the Caldwell County Historical Society in 1965 and operated as a historic house museum. This location on the Yadkin River was originally built upon by the troops serving under Elijah Isaacs in the summer of 1776. At the time, it was known as Fort Isaacs. Caldwell County is a county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. As of the 2020 census, the population was 80,652. William Lenoir (general)
William Lenoir (May 8, 1751 – May 6, 1839) was an American Revolutionary War officer and prominent statesman in late 18th-century and early 19th-century North Carolina. Both the City of Lenoir, North Carolina and Lenoir County, North Carolina are named for him. Additionally, Lenoir City, Tennessee is jointly named for him and for his son, William Ballard Lenoir. The USS Lenoir (AKA-74) was also (indirectly) named for him. Family and early years The Lenoir name is of French origin, literally translating to "the black," which was a term that was similar to how the word "dark" is now used to speak of someone with dark hair and complexion. Yadkin River
The Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in North Carolina, flowing . It rises in the northwestern portion of the state near the Blue Ridge Parkway's Thunder Hill Overlook. Several parts of the river are impounded by dams for water, power, and flood control. The river becomes the Pee Dee River at the confluence of the Uwharrie River south of the community of Badin and east of the town of Albemarle. Elijah Isaacs
Elijah Isaacs (17301799) was a farmer, politician from Wilkes County, North Carolina, and militia officer in Wilkes County Regiment of the North Carolina militia during the American Revolution. Early life Elijah Isaacs was likely born near Berryville, Virginia where in 1771 he sold the farm inherited from his father Samuel Isaacs Jr. By September 1775 he was in Surry County, North Carolina, and a member of the Surry County Committee of Safety with Benjamin Cleveland and Joseph Winston. He had a younger brother named Godfrey Isaacs. His wife's name may have been Mary, and their children were Jinny Isaacs, George Isaacs, Samuel Isaacs, Winny Isaacs, Abbee Isaacs, Elijah Isaacs, and Rebecca Isaacs.
