Fort Bayard is an unincorporated community, in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. History In 1888, Kentuckian chaplain Allen Allensworth moved with his regiment to Fort Bayard, becoming a military educator. In 1889, Allensworth published the pamphlet ''Outline of Course of Study, and'' ''The Rules Governing Post Schools of Ft. Bayard, N.M.,'' which became a military education standard. Also in 1888, United States Army officer Geoffrey Keyes was born in Fort Bayard; he would become significant for his time in Italy during World War II. Köppen Climate Classification
The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Harry Stowers
Harry E. Stowers, Jr. (April 21, 1926 – July 8, 2015) was an American jurist, lawyer, and politician. Born in Fort Bayard, New Mexico, Stowers lived in Madrid, New Mexico and graduated from Silver City High School. During World War II, Stowers served in the United States Army. Stowers then received in bachelor's degree from University of New Mexico and his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center. Stowers then practiced law in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was the city attorney. He also worked as a New Mexico assistant attorney general. Stowers was a Democrat. Stowers served as a New Mexico district court judge. From 1982 to 1989, Stowers served on the New Mexico Supreme Court and was chief justice. Geoffrey Keyes
Lieutenant General Geoffrey Keyes (October 30, 1888 – September 17, 1967) was a highly decorated senior United States Army officer who served with distinction in Sicily and Italy during World War II. Early life Keyes was born on October 30, 1888, in Fort Bayard, New Mexico, the son of Captain Alexander S. B. Keyes, a United States Army officer, and his wife, Virginia Maxwell Keyes. Like his father, Geoffrey enrolled as a cadet at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York, on March 2, 1908, and graduated on June 12, 1913, being commissioned as a second lieutenant, into the Cavalry Branch of the United States Army. Allen Allensworth
Allen Allensworth (7 April 1842 – 14 September 1914) was an American chaplain, colonel, city founder, and theologian. Born into slavery in Kentucky, he escaped during the American Civil War by joining the 44th Illinois Volunteers as a Union soldier. After being ordained as a Baptist minister, he worked as a teacher, led several churches, and was appointed as a chaplain in the United States Army. In 1886, he gained appointment as a military chaplain to a unit of Buffalo Soldiers in the West, becoming the first African American to reach the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in the US Army for 20 years, retiring in 1906. Allensworth was a prolific public speaker, embarking on a speaking tour with the goal of inspiring Black youth. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Area code 575 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the U.S. state of New Mexico.
