Fort Armstrong (Hawaii)
Fort Armstrong, Hawaii was a Coast Artillery Fort built in 1907 and named after Brigadier General Samuel C. Armstrong. Army Corps of Engineers were still at the Fort until 1974. History Fort Armstrong is located at Honolulu, Oahu and was built on fill over Ku-akau-kukui reef in 1907 to protect Honolulu harbor. It had one named Battery, and was spread over 64 Acres. * Battery Tiernon with two pedestal mounted 3-inch M1903 guns from 1911 to 1943The original garrison was the 1st Coast artillery Company followed by the 104th Mine Co. operating the harbor mines. Also stationed there was the 185th Coast Artillery Company. Fort Armstrong continued under the occupation of the Coast Artillery until September 15, 1922, when the Coast Artillery Headquarters moved to Fort DeRussy Military Reservation, Fort De Russy it was abandoned by the U.S. Army by 1950 and is now part of a container port facility. 3-inch Gun M1903
The 3-inch gun M1903 and its predecessors the M1898 and M1902 were rapid fire breech-loading artillery guns with a 360-degree traverse. In some references they are called "15-pounders" due to their projectile weight. They were originally emplaced from 1899 to 1917 and served until shortly after World War II. These 3-inch guns were placed to provide fire to protect underwater mines and nets against minesweepers, and also to protect against motor torpedo boats. In some documentation they are called "mine defense guns". The 3-inch guns were mounted on pedestal mounts (or a retractable "masking parapet" mount for the M1898) that bolted into a concrete emplacement that provided cover and safety for the gun's crew. Fort DeRussy is a United States military reservation in the Waikiki area of Honolulu, Hawaii, under the jurisdiction of the United States Army. Unfenced and largely open to public traffic, the installation consists mainly of landscaped greenspace. Mine Planter Service (U
The U.S. Army Mine Planter Service (AMPS) was an outgrowth of civilian crewed Army mine planter ships dating back to 1904. It was established on July 22, 1918 by War Department Bulletin 43 and placed the Mine Planter Service under the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps. Its purview was to install and maintain the underwater minefields that were part of the principal armament of U.S. coastal fortifications, including those at the approaches to the Panama Canal and the defenses of Manila Bay in the Philippines.
