Forndom
Forndom is the stage name of Swedish multi-instrumentalist and Nordic folk musician Ludvig Swärd. He has released three albums: 2020's ''Faþir'', 2016's ''Dauðra Dura'', and 2015's ''Flykt''. The name Forndom is a combination of the Old Norse word fordom, meaning 'of old', and the modern Swedish word forn, which means 'ancient'. Forndom's sound has been compared to that of Wardruna, as well as other bands in the Nordic folk scene. History and Music Prior to starting Forndom, Swärd ran an amateur photography blog on the social media platform Tumblr. His first release, ''Flykt,'' was made to be an accompaniment to his photos. This first album was recorded entirely using virtual instruments through a DAW. However, Forndom's next release ''Dauðra Dura'' was recorded with real instrumentation played by Swärd. Nordic folk music includes a number of traditions of Nordic countries, especially Scandinavian. The Nordic countries are Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The many regions of the Nordic countries share certain traditions, many of which have diverged significantly. Panopticon is an American black metal band founded by Austin Lunn in Louisville, Kentucky in 2007. Their most recent album ''...And Again Into the Light'' was released in 2021. Hurdy-gurdy
The hurdy-gurdy is a string instrument that produces sound by a hand-crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses ''tangents''—small wedges, typically made of wood—against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board and hollow cavity to make the vibration of the strings audible. Most hurdy-gurdies have multiple drone strings, which give a constant pitch accompaniment to the melody, resulting in a sound similar to that of bagpipes. The birch trumpet (Norwegian: neverlur, Swedish: näverlur, Latvian: tās̆u taure, Lithuanian: ragas, daudytė, Finnish: tuohitorvi, Estonian: karjapasun) is a type of natural trumpet made of spruce covered with birch bark, known in Norway, Sweden, Finland, England, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Estonia. Even cruder and less durable versions were made of plain birch bark. They are associated with the early European Chalet culture, where it was presumably used to intimidate predators, frighten supernatural enemies, and convene council meetings. Usually, the neverlur is a natural horn, having no fingerholes or valves. Normally, a player can play 10 tones from the natural scale on the instrument. Talharpa
The talharpa, also known as a tagelharpa (tail-hair harp) or the stråkharpa (bowed harp), is a four-stringed bowed lyre from northern Europe. It was formerly widespread in Scandinavia, but is today played mainly in Estonia, particularly among that nation's Swedish community. It is similar to the Finnish jouhikko and the Welsh crwth. The instrument is still known in Finland. The name talharpa probably comes from tagel - horsehair - from which the strings were made. Wardruna
Wardruna is a Norwegian music group formed in 2003 by Einar Selvik along with Gaahl and Lindy Fay Hella. They are dedicated to creating musical renditions of Norse cultural and esoteric traditions, and make significant use of Nordic historical and traditional instruments including deer-hide frame drums, flutes, kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn, and lur. Non-traditional instruments and other sources of sound like trees, rocks, water, and torches are also used.
