Former Toponyms Of Places In Pella Prefecture
Many inhabited places in Pella Prefecture of Greece have both Slavic and Greek forms. Some of the forms are identifiably of Greek origin, others of Slavic, yet others of Turkish or more obscure origins. Pella Prefecture
Pella ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Πέλλας) is one of the regional units of Greece, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is part of the Region of Central Macedonia. It is named after the ancient city of Pella, the capital of ancient Macedonia and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The capital of Pella is Edessa with a population of 19,036 inhabitants according to the census of 2011, while the largest town is Giannitsa. Other towns include Aridaia, Skydra, Arnissa and Krya Vrysi. Administration According to the 2011 census the population of the regional unit of Pella was 139,680. It is subdivided into 4 municipalities. Karydia ( el, Καρυδιά, before 1927: Τέχοβο - ''Techovo'', Macedonian and Bulgarian: Техово, ''Tehovo'') is a village in the municipality of Edessa, Pella regional unit, northern Greece. It is situated 9 km northwest of Edessa. At the church in the locality Kosteno ( el, Κόστενο, Macedonian and Bulgarian: Костен, ''Kosten'') there is an annual festival on 21 May, the day of Saint Helena. History There were 81 Christian households in the village of Tehova in 1619–1620. In the book "Ethnographie des Vilayets d'Adrianople, de Monastir et de Salonique", published in Constantinople in 1878, that reflects the statistics of the male population in 1873, ''Téhovo'' was noted as a village with 187 households and 880 Bulgarian inhabitants. In 1900, Vasil Kanchov gathered and compiled statistics on demographics in the area and reported that the village of ''Teovo'' was inhabited by 604 Bulgarian Christians.
