Forest Hills, Nova Scotia
Forest Hills is a subdivision in the community of Cole Harbour and in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Halifax Regional Municipality. History Forest Hills is a new town developed by the former Nova Scotia Housing Commission, a provincial agency, which purchased the land in 1971. In the early 1970s, the Nova Scotia Department of Highways constructed the Forest Hills Parkway, the main road serving the development. Forest Hills was officially opened by housing minister Walter Fitzgerald on June 18, 1974. The master plan, released in 1974, called for eleven predominantly residential development phases as well as a town centre and an interconnected network of parks. Scotia Stadium opened in 1975 with funding from the Housing Commission and later evolved into the Cole Harbour Place sports and recreation centre. Cole Harbour is a former village and current community located in Nova Scotia, Canada that is part of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Geography It is situated 6 kilometres east of the central business district of Dartmouth and takes its name from Cole Harbour, a natural harbour fronting the Atlantic Ocean. Cole Harbour is adjacent to and immediately east of the former city boundary of Dartmouth; prior to municipal amalgamation and the creation of the Halifax Regional Municipality in 1995, Cole Harbour was an unincorporated village within the Municipality of the County of Halifax. Walter Fitzgerald (politician)
Walter Ronald Fitzgerald (May 8, 1936 – October 11, 2014) was a Canadians, Canadian politician. Early life and education Fitzgerald was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of Phylis (Rondeau) and Walter Fizgerald. He graduated from Dalhousie University. Prior to his political career, Fitzgerald was a teacher and a former principal at Rockingstone Heights School in the Spryfield area. Political career He was first elected alderman for Halifax (former city), Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1966. He served as mayor of Halifax from 1971 to 1974, then as MLA for Halifax Chebucto from 1974 to 1981. He was the last mayor of the old city of Halifax from 1994 to 1996, and was the first mayor of the amalgamated Halifax Regional Municipality from 1996 to 2000. Cole Harbour District High School is a Canadian public high school located in the Forest Hills area of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. It is operated by the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE), and is an International Baccalaureate (IB) world school, offering the Diploma program. History Cole Harbour District High School was founded in 1982 by the amalgamation of Cole Harbour High School, founded in 1979, and Gordon Bell High School.
